Marlene and Sirius did not know that right across the corridor was a silently stewing Lily Evans, or that James Potter was following the pair in hopes of getting a chance to hex Sirius.
"Well," Marlene started, hopping up on a desk and crossing her long legs. "That worked..."
"And it really, really, didn't," Sirius finished for her gravely.

Outside the classroom, James Potter came into view around the corner, ruffling one hand through his hair and staring at a map.
To the right: Lily Evans seemed to be pacing back and forth in a classroom.
To the left: Sirius Black and Marlene McKinnon were stationary and very, very close to each other.
James stopped in the hallway and bit his tongue.

"I mean, our plan went off without a hitch," Marlene said after a long pause. "We set them off and got them to realize that working together is going to be nearly impossible. Then I provided the perfect solution--Lily was mad, you owe me one."
"Your idee-aa," Sirius sang, kicking the legs of Marlene's desk from where he sat on the one opposite. Marlene glared at him and shoved his shoulder.
"And then they both got a letter... but now Lily's gone, James is--"
"He didn't come back to the dorm last night," Sirius confirmed. Marlene sighed and pulled the parchment out of her bag with The Plan etched across the top.
"And I get the feeling that Lily's stubbornness will override her common sense this time. So we're back at square one."

James was a few paces away from the left classroom when he suddenly realized that Sirius's dot was moving much, much closer to Marlene's. He hastily stepped away and decided on the spot to deal with Sirius later.

"Negative one," Sirius corrected, stepping down off his desk and leaning against Marlene's to better see the parchment. "Because whatever happens, James is probably going to kill me for telling him to argue with her and Lily's going to kill you for suggesting that she hook up with James."
"And we can't get them in any more trouble," Marlene agreed. "Looks pretty grim."

Lily swore loudly and kicked a chair. It fell to the ground with a loud thunk. She ran a hand through her orange hair so that it stuck out everywhere crazily, and heaved the chair over her head, thin arms trembling under the weight.
"Bloody James Potter," she muttered, her voice supercharged with anger, before hurling the chair at the doorway just as it opened.
<>Hallway<>
James took a few quick strides to the right and yanked open the door. A large black object flew through the air toward him and hit him squarely in the chest. In the moment that followed, he identified it as a chair. The chair and James Potter went tumbling to the ground, the chair with a deafening bang, James with a strangled noise as the air was forced from his chest.
"Oh my God!" a voice exclaimed, sounding as though she was underwater. "Are you alright?"
James shook his head slightly to clear his hearing. His vision was blurry, as his glasses had been knocked off somewhere. He tried to sit up.
"Oh," the voice said, suddenly sounding tired. "It's you."
