“Is that really what your wearing Remy?” Jared asked me for the fifth time since we had left the overnight café a few minutes ago. He had been staring at my costume as though I had been wearing the worst thing in the world; a medieval winter tunic with billowing sleeves and a low square cut neck.
“Yeah, I told you like a month ago I was wearing this.” I said reminding him of the countless conversations we had had about my costume.
Just then Jared laughed shaking his head; I guess he remembered what I was talking about.
“So what time does the old man think your coming back?” Jared asked changing the subject as we walked into Tompkins Square Park; Jared’s shoulders went stiff for a moment as he spoke as though he were expecting something to happen, something bad.
For a moment I thought about asking him about it but I decided against it and instead answered his question.
“Thanks to you my dad thinks Jace is giving me overtime. He thinks I’m getting off at midnight.” I said giving Jared a look that I knew he would have laughed at but he wasn’t looking at me he was looking over his shoulder at something behind us.
I turned around to see what he was looking at but there was nothing there. I almost wanted to blurt that out at him but Jared is a shifter with animal senses, if something was bothering him then…
“Hey Rem…let’s try and speed up huh?” Jared said breaking me from my thoughts, he sounded as though he were upset about something.
“Uh…yeah but what’s the rush?” I asked lifting my dress so I could catch up with him, he had started speed walking and my dress was way too long for me to even try to make an attempt at speed.
“I just want to get to that party early.” Jared said grabbing my wrist, I could tell that he was lying but I didn’t want to say anything about it so I just nodded my head and tired my best to keep up with Jared’s speed while holding up my dress.
The party was on three floors of a brownstone house, apparently the parent’s of the person hosting the party had been out of town. The family had rented out all three levels of the building. The speakers which were hidden somewhere on the ground level were pumping some foreign heavy industrial band’s music. Crowds of people were talking and sipping on drinks congesting the halls and doorways, couples were kissing in corners where they thought no one could see them, and there was a crowd of people standing around an old badge couch watching as two people fought each other in a video game.
“Well here we are.” I heard Jared say over the roar of music and shouting. I turned to Jared to see him smiling a wide ear-to-ear grin; you almost couldn’t tell that he had been upset earlier but that was just like Jared. But he was always quick to recover, there had been times when I had seen him get into fights angry as hell but walk out with a smile.
“Yeah, here we are.” I repeated; I didn’t know what else to say I had never actually been to a party before, I had always imagined what they would be like: tasteful music, lots of mingling, teens having conversation, decent snacks and smuggled in Alcohol. But now that I was actually at a party I felt almost devastated about how off I was.
“So are you going to go on your own or are you going to stick with me for a bit longer?” Jared asked eyeing me from behind his mask; I almost didn’t know how to respond.
I looked around at everyone in their costumes: a few “sexy” firefighters, cops and a busty nurse. Some guys wearing the ghost-face costume with the masks sitting on top of their heads. A hand full of girls in brightly colored wigs, even Jared in his mask. And then there was me dressed in a medieval dress, I felt over dressed.
