It was a beautiful springtime saturday and Tess was out at the Pokémon Daycare. Her grandparents ran it, so she helped them out on the weekends. She was in the backroom, feeding a pikachu a rare candy, when her grandmother came in with a sad look on her face.
"Granmama, what's wrong?" Tess asked, her eyes darting to the egg in her grandmother's arms.
"Oh, dear. A trainer just refused to take the egg his Pokémon had." Grandmama said worridly, "We've never had a trainer reject an egg before, I don't know what to do with it. It's parent is no longer here, and we haven't the space to keep it."
Tess's heart sank. The poor little Poké egg, it's trainer didn't even deserve it. "I'll take it!" She offered, suddenly wanting to prove the trainer wrong, this egg would hatch a very special Pokémon.
"Oh, dearie, are you sure? Pokémon are a big responsibility." Grandmama said, still using her worried tone.
Tess laughed, "I'll be fine, Grandmama! I help you out here all the time, I know plenty about raising Pokémon. Anyway, it's about time that I got my own Pokémon; Mom was only ten when she got her first one, and I'm seventeen!"
"That is true. Oh, it's a good thing it's a Bulbasaur egg, they are starter pokemon." Grandmama said, handing over the egg.
Tess took the egg in her arms. It was heavy, and about the size of a basketball. "Can I leave now so I can start taking care of it?" Tess asked. At her grandmother's nod, Tess left the Daycare and started home. She had only walked a little ways when she heard the sounds of a battle. Jogging around a bend to see if she could spectate it, she came across a trainer battling a wild Eevee with a Venosaur. Irritation immediately bubbled up in her stomach. It had to be the trainer that rejected the egg she now cradled in her arms. The battle came to a close with the trainer capturing the Eevee in a Pokéball.
The trainer turned to smile at her, having noticed her during the battle, and discovered the egg. "Hey, they gave someone the egg I didn't want." He said. Tess's irritation grew.
"No, my grandparents run the Daycare and I took it because it has nowhere else to go. You are such a jerk, abandoning it like that." She huffed shooting him a glare of detest.
"Well, I already have a Venosaur, I don't need another one." The trainer said, attempting to justify himself.
"You could have traded it for a Pokémon you didn't have!" Tess said harshly, "Or released it when it hatched! Anything but abandoning it."
The trainer shuffled his feet awkwardly, it was obvious that he hadn't thought of that. "Well, you missed your opportunity, the little Bulbasaur is going to come live with me and be my starter Pokémon." Tess said, then stalked off.
"My name is Lamont!" The trainer called after her, "If it matters any."
Tess turned back to him, "Well, Lamont. From this day forward, you are my rival; and when this Pokémon hatches and grows up to be strong, I'm going to battle you, and show you that you shouldn't have rejected this egg!"
