“Blow-upper!” said the girl grinning. She nodded; “Sounds grand doesn’t it?” she bounced up and off the seat, stumbling a bit from the sudden change in positions. Holding out a slender hand, she added, “Chemistry is my kind of thing. Call me if you ever need to blow up something”
I shook her hand and she resumed her position on the sofa, but not before looking up at angry face in the corner through her lashes, I couldn’t help but notice that he took no notice in her although she was the kind of girl people would love to hate. A willowy but feminine figure...she actually had a figure; perfect hair and she was nice. Like I said people would love to hate her…
Next he approached a petite Asian girl curled on a green chair that seemed to swallow her. The light in Alex’s wolf eyes gleamed differently…definitely something going on there. The entire atmosphere in the room changed.
It appeared the girl hadn’t noticed the spotlight was on her until she paused from reading an abnormally fat book and looked up with big brown eyes. Her pixie face turned red as Alex introduced her as Hailey; a girl whose voice can go to extremely high pitches and who hacks better than the best professionals.
My mind drifted again during the last introduction, taking in the surroundings. There was a corridor heading off to one side with white doors only and the door through which I’d just left began this series of doors. On two adjacent walls lay 4 doors each with the name of a person I just met.
Behind lay the same crack, just that: a crack in the wall from a few inches below the white ceiling to the floor. How was I getting out of this underground hell hole?!
There was a sudden feeling of being watched. I was about to voice my feelings when there was a woosh followed by a ding; the type of ding that announced the arrival of an elevator but there were no doors that looked elevator worthy.
I whirled, realising the sound came from behind and of course right where the crack was, lay the shiny tin can called an elevator and exiting said elevator was Santa. Well…if Santa lost weight and sold the toys instead of just giving to all children in the world, he would look like this guy did.
There was a regal air about him that demanded everyone’s attention just by entering a room as he did just now. His crisp suit and gold topped cane screamed classy and something about him said wealth.
His piercing black eyes that gave midnight some competition bored into mine and he smiled kindly, eyes twinkling. “Miss? How are you feeling?” he spoke in a smooth, deep voice.
I couldn’t help but return the smile and said as politely as I could, “I’m fine thank you but-“
“Excellent!’ he gave a booming laugh that echoed throughout the room.
Getting tired of him and underground, I got to my point, I figured since I would be out of his hair soon, he wouldn’t care whether I was rude or not, that is, if he even remembered me. It seemed my own mother hadn’t remembered me since she didn’t bother to search for her missing daughter.
“Ok so is there anything else I should know?” I said, standing. Santa looked startled for a moment before he remembered the message I presumed he came to deliver.
“Children” he said to the odd people I had just met, “Your teachers won’t be here today somethings came up that need to be dealt with immediately” He nodded, proud that he delivered the message properly, and spun on his heel, returning to the elevator.
Craving the outside world and longing to remove myself from the ground, I almost ran to the elevator, waving a hurried goodbye over my shoulder.
Santa seemed confused, “Miss?” was that a British accent?
I grinned, about to burst with just the thought of freedom. “A-aren’t we going up…”
Something about his expression made me stop. Am I missing something? He sighed as if he heard my thoughts, something like pity in that sigh. I don’t need pity! I needed to fly! My wings were cramping up!
Taking me by the elbow he led me out of the elevator. All eyes were on me now as I stood in absolute confusion.
“Miss Eliza” he hesitated. “You can’t leave”
“Wh-what?” what I meant was what is this white haired old man saying?!
“I couldn’t help but notice you have a…erm…Tracker issue” So?! “And you see Miss, this is the safest place you have since I’ve been made to understand your whereabouts when you were found. So” he was speaking to Alex now while I noticed a hallway running to my right (that ought to lead somewhere…right? “Show her to the guest area, she could sleep there for now”
Old man turned and returned to the elevator in which I hoped he got stuck or fell into the core of the earth. Alex approached, smiling sympathetically, all eyes still on me.
I did what I’d hoped would lead me to an escape. I ran. Straight down the white corridor.
