Silence.
Everything was silent. Dark. Not an uncomfortable darkness. It covered him like a warm body.
It felt like an eternity until the body started to let go of him, leaving him cold and shivering. A sudden sound came to his ear. A weird sound, almost silent. He couldn't make out where it came from, couldn't make out who it came from. But it got louder and louder, every second, until it almost hurt.
He opened his eyes, wide. It felt like the sun was right over his head, shining right into his eyes, and god, it was so bright, he let out a small groan. He closed his eyes again, not able to deal with the sudden light.
His mind wandered: ''Where am I?'' He tried to move his legs. But two things were different; It hurt, like hundreds of band aids quickly ripped from his skin, maybe even worse. But the most scary part about this whole situation was that he could only feel one leg moving.
''What..?'' he suddenly whimpered. The pain almost made him cry, but it didn't matter in that moment. Regardless of the discomfort he felt when he opened his eyes, he tried to lift the blanket he was covered under with his left arm. Big mistake, it hurt abnormally. His sight was still cloudy and his mind was full with questions, but only one thing mattered for him right now. He carefully moved his right arm to prevent sudden pain, but it wasn't as bad as he thought. He slowly took one part of his blanket and moved it away. He looked down on his body: it was covered in some kind of dress. No, not a real dress, really; it had little green dots all over it, was stiff and open on the back. His eyes gazed further down on his body, until they stopped at his left leg. He had to understand what exactly he was looking at. The leg was covered in bandages. But that wasn't the thing that made him shudder; it was half his other leg missing.
He closed his eyes, trying to figure out what the hell he looked at seconds ago, lost in his words. ''This has to be a dream.'' What he saw couldn't be real. He took a deep breath, and opened his eyes once again. Fully believing that his mind just tricked him, that he just didn't see correct. But he did. A part of his right leg was still missing.
He didn't know how to deal with the pain he felt. No; it wasn't just the regular physical pain you feel when you fall over or cut yourself on paper. This was a worse way of pain, spilling over him like a big wave. He couldn't move, couldn't scream. Didn't know what to do, how to deal with all of this. His heart ached, his throat burned. Suddenly everything was dark again. But that was okay, because everything else wasn't.
After a few hours, he woke up again. His whole body hurt and he let out a small sob. His face felt wet; he must have been crying in his sleep. Slowly, trying to figure out what's going on, he remembered what happened. The lights. The pain. His leg. All of the feelings and thoughts started coming back and it was impossible to bear it, so he hoped that he gets unconscious again, pressing his eyes together while trying to hold back his tears. But it didn't work. So he just cried again. He wanted to jump from this bed, knock everything over what comes in his way, wanted to scream. But he couldn't. He opened his eyes yet again, analyzing the room. It wasn't bright like before, it was dark, only the moon was shining through the windows.
He let his eyes wander through the room; the walls were plain white, no pictures hung up. On his left was a second bed, but he couldn't see if someone else was laying in it, a partition wall forbidding him the sight. On his right was a heart monitor, silently beeping, and a table with an empty vase and a glass of water. Just by looking at it he realized that he was incredibly thirsty.
Slowly raising his arm, he tried to grab the glass, but failed. It was too far away; he tried moving his body but the pain was too much. His throat was very dry and it was almost impossible to get a sound out of it, but he tried it anyways: ''Hello?'' he pressed out. No answer. ''Hello? Is someone here?'' ... still no answer. He was too silent, but his throat hurt too much to speak louder.
