The ice chilled wind ruffled Lilly's snowy pelt as she made her way swiftly through the snow covered forest. She had been lucky enough to find a hare on her way back from the river. Most of the snow hares were already snuggled deep in their burrows safe from the impending blizzard. Any animal could tell when a storm was stirring, especially one like this. Lilly could already see the clouds gathering overhead. Her icy blue eyes reflected her concern; a storm this large could destroy her den. Her den was merely a fallen tree with a hollowed out space beneath it. Though she had dug her den deep within the earth she had not managed to make it quite as deep as she'd hoped. Her pups were at risk of being exposed to the elements of the storm.
Lilly decided not to chance it. She moved her pups to another den. She had found an abandoned fox den not too far from her own. She wasn't completely sure if the fox had abandoned it or if it had just been gone a while. The scent smelled a few days old, but sometimes foxes would leave their nests for days at a time to look for another den. She carefully examined the burrow; it seemed to have been abandoned for a while. The fox's nest was mostly gone, only a few spots of stray bedding remained, and the scent was barely noticeable. Her guess was that the scent near the entrance must have been another fox sniffing around the den. Either way, if a fox came in there now it'd be dead within seconds. She was not planning on giving up this den, especially with her pups inside.
Her two tiny pups played happily in their new den, with so many tunnels to explore, who wants to sleep? They had only begun walking; their tiny legs carried them clumsily throughout the den. They were only two weeks old, but the troublesome duo romped and tumbled over one another trying to attack a grasshopper that had trespassed in their new home. There was no need to worry about it being eaten; it would be pawed to death long before that happened. The little black paws smacked and poked at the insect until it no longer tried to escape them. The curious pups prodded the motionless green creature until they finally lost interest. The twins went back to exploring their new home. The young male was the leader of the two; he always managed to get the two into trouble. Only a few days before he and his sister had found a snake, lucky for them it had not been poisonous. Their mother killed it before it could do any real harm. The little girl on the other hand, she was an angel. She did her best to behave, but she had a little trouble with curiosity. She just couldn't seem to keep herself at bay. She was a wanderer, and couldn't seem to stay in one place.
"Raven, Shadow." Lilly called her pups from the main chamber in the den. "Come here please." The pups raced to their mother, fighting over who would get to her first. They burst through the entrance of the chamber, greeted by their mother's warm smile. "What do you pups think of our new home?"
"I love it!" Raven waged her tail enthusiastically.
"Shadow, what do you think?" Lilly looked curiously at her son, he had been quieter than usual.
"It's... it's ok..." Shadow stared his paws on the floor; he didn't seem too enthused about their move.
"What's wrong Shadow? Don't you like it here?" Lilly stared questionably at her son.
"Why did we move?" He looked her in the eyes; his reddish-brown eyes reflected her own fear back at her. "Why are we running?" This took her by surprise, she had never said anything about the reason they didn't have a pack, nor did she say they were running. There was no denying the questioning look in his eyes, he knew more than what he let on.
"Shadow..." Lilly was too stunned to speak, even though, she knew she should've know he'd be smarter than the average pup. After all, he did have Lupusus blood and Lycanthrope blood for that matter. He had the blood of two very powerful ancient wolves. The Lupusus race was a name for fallen wolves. A long time ago, there were three main sections of wolves, Lupuseraphs (angel wolves), Lupus (earth wolves), and Lycanthropes (demon wolves). The angel wolves lived in peace with the earthly wolves seeing of how when earthly wolves die they either becomes a Lupuseraph or a Lycanthrope. The Lycanthropes on the other hand hated them all; they were always at war with the Lupuseraph.
