jerome clarke. when mara jaffray heard that name all she could think of was all the things jerome had done. and, of course there was more that she didn't know about. but, earlier today they hung out for a little while at school, played chess, talked. it was all going fine until jerome opened his heart to her.

mara's pov:

"my parents left me here to rot. and i guess that's what i did." she remembered him telling her. she began thinking maybe all the jokes he plays, the people he blackmails, maybe it's all a cover, a distraction. mara thought. maybe there's more to him.

you can't judge a book by it's cover. so, you can't judge a person if you only know half the story. this intrigued her. she wanted to get to know him better. a lot better.

jerome's pov:

"what's going on with you and mara, dude?" alfie asked.

"what are you talking about?" he asked.

"don't play dumb. anyone with half a brain could see you two's little love party yesterday."

"oh, shut up! nothing happened. besides, she's with dumb mick." he told alfie.

"when has that ever been a problem for you? you're jerome clarke! you want something, you take it." he told jerome.

"take what, alfie? there's nothing going on with mara and i."

that was a close one. i can't have anyone finding out about this. i have a reputation to uphold.

mara's pov:

mick comes back tomorrow. why am i so worried i'm gonna blurt something out about me and jerome? no, you just talked about some things, why should you feel like that should be kept a secret? you're getting worried for nothing.
you have a wonderful boyfriend, mara. and nothing even happened yesterday with jerome.

right?

jerome's pov:

yes, i lied to alfie. yes, i feel bad. but, no, i don't regret it. i do feel a little bad considering it's alfie. i mean, the guy tells me everything, including his fears of red doors and olives. but, it had to be done. no one can find out about how i feel about mara.
