"Don't take the bottle. It won't help you. Put it down." I think to myself. Everyone has gone to sleep by now. It's 3:26 in the morning. What I would give to be sleeping right now.
"Try laying down. Just put the bottle down."
I'm frozen. I can't move- I can't think.
My thoughts are cars bustling in a busy city, I can't make them stop.
"Stop. Stop. Don't take a sip. Don't."
I can't listen.
"Don't. Drink."
Stop. Stop the honking, the blaring, the rumbling.
"Don't drink."
I take a sip, the bitter wine dampening my lips and gliding down my throat.
The voice in my head is shrieking traffic, bumper-to-bumper, a raging driver.
I take another sip.
I can't sleep in this damn city.
"Alright, one of you has to lock up, so I'll let you decide that amongst yourselves." Arin throws the office keys on the table. "You're both sure you don't wanna come to the bar with us?"
"You know I want to, but I have work waiting for me at home." Danny replies, organising his things and doing last minute finishing touches to his work.
"I'm with him. I've got some stuff to do for my other jobs, and my roommate is probably waiting for me to make dinner." I lift up my head from the monitor to address Arin.
"Fine, fine. You're gonna miss out on some fun though."
"I'll make my own fun. It's called my right hand and some lotion." Danny jokes and makes a phallic gesture, as the per usual. Arin and I both laugh because who doesn't laugh at good old fashioned dick humour.
Arin says his goodbyes before leaving Danny and I alone in the office building.
I lean back in my chair and sigh. Another long day just going to be followed by another long night. I can't catch the slightest break in my life. 2 jobs, 50 hours of work, and 1 friend that I am in debt to. California was eating me alive, like a giant Hannibal Lecter.
I power down my work station and begin to gather my things. I really just want to get home.
"Jesus, when do you not work." Danny jokes as he makes his way over to my work station.
"I'll get back to you once I find an answer."
"Now that, is truly the question of the ages.
Forget about the 'what is time?' and 'is there and end to the universe?' the real question is when will Allison get a fucking break!"
I scoff and keep packing up my things.
"You need a break."
"So I've been told." I respond, keeping my eye contact to a minimum. I really don't want to talk, even to a good friend like Dan. I just want to get home for the night.
"Why don't we take a break together? A night out. We can go kick back at my place, watch shitty movies while eating even shittier popcorn- we can even go to In 'N' Out! They're having a special on milkshakes..." Danny smiles and shimmies his shoulders.
"Well, it sounds nice, but I really-"
"Allison. Come on. Stop working for 2 hours. I'm sure Jacob will survive without you making him food, and your bills will be still stacked neatly." Danny interrupts and reassures me. He really wants to spend the evening with me.
"I wouldn't call it neat, but- fine. Let me just text Jacob and I'll just follow you in my car-"
He interrupts me again. "No, no. Ride in my car. I just fixed the roof." I raise my brow at him. "What? It's apart of the 'Night With Sexbang' package." He smirks and places his hands on his chest.
