Hey again! Same day. Because I have nothing to do. Here is a random "something" that I was going to write about for my public speaking class.
Enjoy!
A CAMP director at SUNY Oneonta once said, "dark-skinned people tend to sit at the back of or away from the rest of the class because we stand out and we don't want to." She's not wrong.
I'm quiet and withdrawn and frightened to speak in any class because the times that I have and have been ridiculed and made fun of have scarred me so deeply.
Example: In middle school in my 6th grade science class, this kid wouldn't stop talking during class. I asked him to be quiet, words were exchanged. I said at least I'm trying to learn. And he replied with, "at least my ancestors weren't slaves."
That hit me deep. I mean, I'd experienced racism before, but that had really hurt. And I told my mom when she came to pick me up that day. And she took me straight to the principal. And when I tried to tell him, I couldn't. I just broke down.
Now, no one should have to experience racism. It's a vile thing. A lot of people, does not matter the color of your skin, have dealt with some form of racism. And no one should have to. And definitely not a child.
Example: I remember as a child (I'm 18 now) having this one teacher who was always yelling at me for something. And I remember my whole class and I growing little pea plants and her throwing mine out because she said I did it wrong. I was young, but I wasn't stupid. I knew the components necessary to grow and keep plants alive. And I didn't think that I did anything wrong. But in her eyes, I guess I did. And because I was young, I can't be sure if it was racism or if it was the fact that she didn't like me as a student, or maybe it's how I saw everything happening. Maybe that's not how it happened in her eyes. But my mom and I...
And I know a lot of people get aggravated when black people say, "oh you only said that cause I'm black." But its so true. Certain things happen to me because of the color of my skin. And it's possible that you, reading this now, have had it happen to you too.
Okay! If you like this, let me know. I altered it a little from the original near the end, and also the ending. Uhh, I probably won't do anything like this again unless I'm asked to. Not sure. You know, let me know what you think!!! Bye!
