The howl. It chilled. It echoed throughout the valley of the wolf, warning all possible trespassers to stay clear.
The wolf gracefully got up from his haunches and gracefully made his way up to a towering rock. His rock. With a strong bound he was on top. He opened his mouth wide and howled again. There was a resounding echo.
This time there was an answer. It came from not too far away. The howl mocked the wolf. A challenge.
With an angry snarl the wolf leaped off his rock and landed almost face to face with two invaders - a male and female wolf who were seeking refuge.
The scrawny female nudged her mate, but he ignored her. She saw the great wolf and nudged her mate again. Still he ignored her. Giving up, she backed away for safety to watch the battle that was sure to happen.
Growling, the wolf advanced closer to the skinny male invader. He would have no trespassers in his valley and intended to make this clear. He leaped toward the offender's neck, his lips pulled back, revealing powerful white teeth that could easily bring down a caribou two times bigger than he.
The male sprung out of the way just in time. The wolf's teeth just nicked his shoulder. He knew then that it would be a losing battle unless he escaped. With a frightened yelp, he scampered away, out of the valley. His mate followed.
The wolf's yellow eyes glinted. He had won this time, but there always would be another. He turned away with a flick of his bushy gray tail. His valley was once again free of trespassers.
