It was a dark day in district eleven- as it is every year on this day.

Today was the reaping- where two teenagers, one boy and one girl, would be chosen to participate in the annual Hunger Games.

The Hunger Games was a tradition created by WICKED; the Capitals leaders, where two tributes from each of the twelve districts would fight for their lives in an arena. The Hunger Games was a way of declaring peace between the Capital and the districts, however only the Capital saw it that way.

Twenty four tributes compete in the Hunger Games and only four are able to leave, alive.

Zola was sixteen, therefore, her name was in the draw a total of five times. Five chances for her name to be chosen.

Zola was in charge of gathering bananas that day. She moved through the trees effortlessly, despite the large sack full of green fruit she carried on her back.

She sat down on a thick branch and looked at her wristwatch. The reaping started at six and the time was dangerously close to it- 5:30, though she wanted nothing more then to skip the entire ceremony, and she would if it was possible.

When Zola walked into her house, the smell of chicken soup tickled her nose. Her mother was an amazing cook as well as a talented seamstress. Her mother handed her a dress, kissing her for a long time on the forehead.

The dress was a light blue colour, it came down to just above her knees and was collared with short sleeves.  Her Mother made her a new dress each year for the reaping, however Zola felt it was a distraction to keep her mind off the whole situation. She also made a new shirt and tie for her brother- Sabin; and this was his last year.

When it was time to leave for the reaping, Zola's mother sat her and Sabin down at the dinner table. She held both their hands and said "I love you more then the sun, the moon and all the stars." As she always did. Zola was never sure why her mother said that, but it comforted her. It represented her mother. It felt like home.

After doing the mandatory DNA test, Zola found a seat near the middle of the row with some other girls she associated herself with and her brother went to the boys seats.

The ceremony began as it always did, with a video created by members of WICKED explaining why the Hunger Games took place and Zola couldn't help but roll her eyes.

Then, a lady stepped up on stage- Effie Trinket. She was wearing the most ridiculous bright pink dress with a wig that was approximately as tall as she was and paired with large heels and the most demonic makeup Zola has ever seen. However, she always dressed that way, as did most of the residence living in the Capital.

Effie shuffled over to the mic, hardly able to walk in her ecstatic heels.

Once she made it to the mic, Effie cleared her throat and began to speak.

"Welcome to the seventy fourth Hunger Games!"

The way she said it. The pleased expression in her voice made Zola shiver. Effie, along with every human in the capital, didn't give a damn about what was about to happen to 24 innocent teenagers.
