I watch with a feeling of desperation as he balls up his fists and pounds them on the glass barrier. Like always, nothing happens, and his arms drop to his sides. He looks at the key he is holding in his hands, and then looks back up at me. I can see the hopelessnes I feel in my chest reflecting in his deep green eyes. I can see that he is screaming something at me, but I cannot hear what he is saying. I want him to know that I'm still here, that I'll always be with him, so I put my hand on the glass. I feel the tears coming on, but I try to hold them in for his sake. I so badly want to just break through this glass and go hide myself in his arms for the rest of my life. But the door is locked. I am standing looking at the lock on my side, and then looking at the key on his. As if he is giving up, he leans his forehead against the glass, a tear rolling down his cheek. I take a step forward and do the same.

My alarm goes off and I wake up, disturbing my dream. I used to smile when I woke up after that dream- just because Harry Styles was in it- but after about the third time I had it, it started freaking me out. I mean it's normal for fans to have dreams about their favourite celebrities...but the same dream every night in a row for 2 years? Yeah-that's not normal.

Which is why I never tell anyone, they all think I'm crazy enough anyway. So, I just close my eyes, and imagine his green eyes looking into mine, and convince myself I'm not going insane. It works-usually.

I walk downstairs, and am greeted by the smell of pancakes and maple syrup.

"Morning, Mom," I say yawning.

"Morning Monika." She comes over and kisses me on the cheek, and I swat her away.

"Mom. What's with the fancy breakfast? I would have been OK with Fruit Loops, honestly," I sigh.

"Honey. It's your birthday."

"And I said don't make a big deal about it this year. Remember?"

"Monika, I know your upset about your dad leaving, and I just wanted to make you feel better. That's all I wa-"

"Ugh. Mom, just stop OK? Can't you just let a depressed girl be depressed?" I grab a pancake off of the platter and walk back upstairs. It's my 18th birthday, and my dad decided that a good early present would be to walk out with all our money, and say goodbye with a note written on a napkin that smells like whiskey and cigarettes. I have the right to want to skip a party. And be depressed.

At least I'll aways have my One Direction. I grab my phone and hit shuffle on my Made in the A.M playlist. When the music starts playing, my hand reaches up for the pendant that hangs around my neck. It's like a reaction to the sound, I don't even think about doing it. I lift up the chain and look at it. Hanging from it is a plain little lock. No diamonds, no glitter, just a simple lock. I always wear it, it's like my lucky charm. I actually can't think of a time when I've taken it off. It's just always there. I don't even remember when or where I got it.

As Wolves starts blasting through my speakers, I drop the necklace and start getting ready for school. I silently mouth the words to myself as I pull on a pair of jeans and a hoodie that I hope has no food stains on it. I quickly run a brush through my hair and grab my backpack. I plug my headphones into my phone, put them in my ears, and leave my room.

I turn up my music when I get to the bottom of the stairs. I walk past my mom, and she says something. I don't hear what it was, so I just wave behind me and walk out the door. I hope it wasn't anything important.

*******

My music still blasting in my ears, I pull open the front doors of the school. The rancid school smell rushes through my nose, and I try to hold in a cough. When I get through the foyer, I see that Skylar- my best friend- is already wating on me. Her eyes catch mine and she quickly runs over to me, with a bounce in her step.

"Monika! Happy Birt-"

I put my hand up to stop her. "Don't. Even. Say it. It's bad enough it's my birthday, don't even imply that it is a happy one, because we both know it's not."

"Well someone is in a bad mood." Skye wrinkles her nose and flips her long black hair over her shoulder. "I guess you don't want your present then." She huffs, and then walks up the stairs.

"OK. You know I want the present."

She giggles. "Please. No matter how bad your birthday is, you always want the present."

"Obviously." I roll my eyes, and she laughs again. As we walk down the long blue coloured hallway, I try not look anyone in the eyes. I hear a few people mumble something to me that sounds like happy birthday, but I ignore them and keep walking.

We walk past a group of guys, and one of them, Emmet, I think? Says happy birthday. On a normal day I would probably giggle like some idiot because he talked to me, but right now I'm not in the mood. I don't even smile.

"She said thank-you in her mind." I hear Skye tell him between laughs.

"Skye. Shut up!" I nudge her with my elbow. We come up to our lockers that are side by side, and I quickly turn in my combination.

"So...did you hear from your dad?" She asks me cautiously.

"No. Did you think I would? Honestly, I don't even care anymore," I lie.

"Oh. Right. Hey, at least you'll always have Harry."

"Yeah. In my dreams," And I can't even have him there, I think to myself.

"Oh, did you hear? One direction is going to be playing a comeback concert in a city near here. We should totally get tickets."

"We should obviously get tickets! But I have no money, remember?" I drop my books in my locker, and pull out my headphones. As I wrap them around my phone, I turn it on to look at the picture of Harry on my lockscreen. I bite my lip, trying not to smile.

"Oh my gosh, Moni. Who even cares. It's their COMEBACK concert. We have to go. I can buy you a ticket."

"Yeah , maybe." I say, imagining standing in the front row, with Harry, Liam, Louis, and Niall standing on the stage right in front of me. Once again, my hand reaches for my necklace, and I run it back and forth on the chain. The loud bell rings, disturbing me from my day dream.

"Ugh, thats the bell," Skye complains. "We've got accounting, let's go."

"I'm coming. Meet you there." I let go of the chain, and grab my binder. Still thinking about the boys, I quickly lock my locker and turn to walk back down the stinky hallway, bracing myself for another awful day of classes. Here we go again, I sing in my mind, smiling to myself.
