Everyone fell silent. Kate looked at the man to see if he was pulling her leg. Everyone else has their guns down and their hands in the air. I could kill them all in one fell swoop. And he's just sitting there waiting for me?
"I know you probably don't trust me. I wouldn't either. I'm not 'listening in' on you right now. I'm going to turn around. If you trust me enough to let me live, and I trust you enough to give you this choice, we may be able to talk this out. I don't want to resort to violence-- I know from experience how those encounters go. The choice is yours." He turned his back, allowing her an easy shot, and stood there for a minute. She pondered for a moment. I've been running for so long. I haven't taken a nap in the last few days. I can't keep doing this forever. He seems trustworthy enough. With that said, how would I know these guys are going to let me go? She sat there, pondering for a bit. At the end, she probably would have decided to let them take her. Life in prison was bad, sure, but surely not as bad as what she had been through. And if she kept this up, she would die, guaranteed. It was only a matter of time.
But just then she sensed something. As a matter of fact, she realized something just to her left had been moving for a few seconds now. Slowly, and harder to notice than most things. She looked left, and sure enough, one of the policemen was pointing his gun right at her. In that fraction of a second, when she turned to face him, she felt a sudden explosion some number of meters in the direction she was now looking.
Then, all of hell broke loose.
