I was lacing up my dirty old black converse when Keith grabbed his bag and ran out the door without saying anything. (he was always late for work at the local coffee shop) It was the first day of senior year and I was that girl that ate alone at lunch. It didn't matter much to me, though. I walked out the door and to the bus stop.
I walked into the bus shelter and pulled out my phone from my butt pocket. After a couple of minutes, a girl came and sat next to me. She had long black hair and was wearing a red and black flannel shirt with a beanie. I didn't recognize her, but then again I didn't know a lot of people so that wasn't all that surprising.
When the bus finally got to my stop I sat in the far back (I always sat in the back because the football team always sat in the front usually pissing off the bus driver until he threatens to throw them off the bus) and took out the novel I was reading, Me Before You.

I walked into the school and nothing had changed, although in it's defence it hadn't changed since the ninth grade when they added mystery meat Monday in the cafeteria (that was the day where basically everyone brings lunch from home instead of getting food poisoning from Friday's lunch) and even then people would pretty much just walk to the Tim Hortons or Starbucks down the block.
The only thing that had changed over the summer was that they repainted the purple on the office doors.
I got to my locker and looked across the hallway to see this group of people crowded around this person locker talking. All I heard was someone yell, "OMG! Kayla's naked!" Yet she was just wearing a sports bra and literally putting on a shirt as the person was yelling. I will never understand people.
The first class I had was English with Mr. BT. He was a real genuine teacher, he would make the occasional joke while teaching and he would talk to me after class and was one of the only people I talked to at school. He also moved up from grade ten English to grade eleven and then grade twelve. Although I had never asked him I felt as if he moved grades just to look out for me.

Unlike everyone else, my day was actually going by pretty fast. At lunch, I was sitting at a table in the senior's area in the cafeteria (it's pretty much just an area that has couches and tall tables with bar stools that the seniors get to go in) feeling all proud that I could sit there. Halfway through lunch, I was eating my sandwich watching YouTube videos when Claire sat across from me and by the look on her face she was basically already done with the day.
"Whats wrong with you? Last time I saw you this tired was when we pulled that all-nighter back the eighth grade and you fell asleep in the popcorn." I laughed taking out my earbuds.
She let out a little chuckle but still looked really tired. "I have Mrs. Jensen for science and I might as well bring a pillow and a blanket to school because everyone is pretty much sleeping most of the time or playing Candy Crush on their phones!" She exclaimed. She straightened her shirt and ran her fingers through her hair. "Sorry I didn't get much sleep last night. Anyways hows your senior year going so far?"
I closed my laptop and put it in my bag. "Well, I have Mr. BT for math again this year so that's a plus." When I said that she gave me the weirdest look, she raised her eyebrows, crossed her arms and took a long deep breath. "What?"
"I'm just saying Alex, you've missed out on the past three years of high school and the only people you've talked to is Mr. BT and of course me you're favorite cousin in the world." She said dramatically flipping her hair. "All I'm saying is you can't keep living in the shadows you have to start living and having fun at some point." Claire pretty much said this to me every single year and sometimes she would change it up and ask Mr. BT to tell me.
