CHAPTER 1

The gentle click of the door unlocking filled the silence of the empty hallway. I opened the door very slowly trying to file every single detail into my memory. Once I opened the door, I slowly stepped into the small classroom. I looked around. A large chalkboard dominated one wall of the room, while the rest of the walls were decorated with nothing but a light blue paint. I estimated about 25 desks and chairs to be in the room. I walked over to the teacher’s desk which had its back to the chalkboard. I slowly slid the wooden chair back from the desk and memorized the creaking sound that it made. The high school was located in a small town.  The school itself was pretty small and at first sight I thought it was an elementary school. I excitedly looked at my watch, which disappointingly informed me that there was still half an hour left for class to begin. So I decided to go to the teachers’ lounge and meet the rest of the staff.

I walked down the long narrow hallway to the teachers’ lounge. I stopped in front of a doorway that greeted me with multi-colored cutout letters that read teachers’ lounge. I knocked hesitantly then opened the door a quarter of the way. “Don’t be shy Mr. Scott, come in!” demanded a familiar, friendly booming voice. As I opened the door I immediately smelled the strong scent of coffee. I schooled my face to hide my disgust from the nauseating scent, I’ve always hated coffee.  Stepping in I saw that the booming voice belonged to the physics teacher, Mr. Adams. “Good morning Mr. Scott,” Mr. Adams said. “Good morning” I replied. “Are you ready for the big day?” asked Mrs. Patterson, the calculus teacher.  “Well actually I’ve been ready since high school but the pesky requirements for being a teacher held me back.” In response to my comment all the teachers laughed. “Come and sit Mr. Scott,” ordered Mr. Adams waving his hand towards a chair across from him. “Umm I thought teachers’ call each other by first name.” I said while sitting down. “Well that is generally true… Call me Mark” said Mr. Adams. “O well then, call me Eric,” I replied. “Want some coffee Eric?” Mark said. “Umm no thank you, I am not a big fan of coffee,” I replied hesitantly. I know it’s silly, but I was afraid that the other teachers would suddenly think I’m crazy because I didn’t like coffee. “Well, join the club,” Mr. Hamilton, the high school principal said stepping into the room from the hallway. He took a paper cup from the cup tower next to the coffee machine. “But I would never survive the day without it.” Mr. Hamilton had happily given me a tour of the school the day before. He was evidently very proud of his students and staff. After Mr. Hamilton was finished pouring his coffee he pulled out the chair next to me. “So are you nervous about your first day?” the principal asked while taking his seat. “Mr. Scott was just telling us how the pesky laws held him back from teaching,” Mrs. Patterson interjected. Mr. Hamilton raised an eyebrow at me. “Umm… Mrs. Patterson was asking whether I was ready for the big day and I answered that I’ve been ready since twelfth grade, but the law that said I need a degree to teach held me back,” I explained to the principal. “O, well then I wish you luck,” Mr. Hamilton said to me.
