MAYA'S POV:

"Maya, you haven't spoken a word since you've been here. Are you alright?" Topanga questions with her typical fierce look piercing through my tainted soul.

No wonder Riley always seems to see right through me; her mother can burn a hole through your heart within seconds with just her eyes.

I quietly swallow my grilled chicken and rice that Topanga had prepared for her whole family, which always includes me. My mother is working late tonight, therefore she has planned for me to eat dinner with the Matthews, then she would pick me up after along with some leftovers for herself.

Usually, I love eating dinner with Riley and her family. Heck, they were my family for years until I discovered that my mom is just like me.

We were left.

Now, I have been left again.

Lucas has tangled with my heart ever since he came to John Quincy Adams Middle School. He would always daze into my eyes, let me tease him, and always knew the right things to say at the right times. Lucas had me in the palm of his hands all the time, I just never knew it. In Texas, with a million stars in the sky, one blazing campfire, and one undeniable love, Lucas had my heart in the palm of his hands, and I trusted him with it.

Then, in an instant, he shattered it.

Which means that tonight's dinner is a little different than most.

"She's fine, Mom," Riley mutters as she sips her water.

"Riley, Maya is not okay. What happened?" Topanga continues, irritating Riley even more.

Riley slams her water down harshly, causing Auggie to jump. "Mom, I don't know! Maya refuses to tell me!"

Using my silver fork, I anxiously fumble with the leftover chicken and rice on my plate, blocking out the noise. Ever since I was a little girl, blocking out noise has come natural. My mom and dad had always fought loudly right in front of my innocent little eyes, and it only took a few hours for my mind to ignore the noise and live in my own world.

A gentle hand touches my shoulder, pushing me to turn around. "Maya, you can tell me anything, remember?"

Riley smiles and raises her arm to reveal our friendship ring.

Corey, sitting next to Riley, clears his throat obnoxiously as he inhales slowly. "Does this have anything to do with Lucas?"

My eyes twitch uncontrollably and my legs begin to quiver under me. I hold the table to steady myself before looking Corey right in the eye with raised eyebrows.

"This has nothing to do with that asshole," I murmur under my breath.

"Maya!"

"I'm sorry, Topanga," I apologize, noticing Auggie next to her, covering his ear with his hands. "Sorry, Augster."

Auggie chuckles as he covers his mouth with his hands, whispering to me. "Don't worry, I've heard that word before. Ava said that's what I can be sometimes!"

A sincere smile spreads across my face as I listen to the innocent humor of an eight year old: tiny little human beings that never have to worry about stupid little things like I am. They are so innocent, as innocent as I once was.
