That night, while Scarlet readied herself for bed, her father came home.  When he came into the room, Scarlet smiled brightly.

“Daddy! I’m so glad you’re home.”

“As am I.” Killian said, kissing her on the forehead and handing her a box that had been hidden behind his back.  “Happy Birthday sweetheart.”

Scarlet sat on the edge of her bed and tore into the box.  Inside was the most beautiful dagger she had ever seen.  The blade came to a perfect point; covered in ivy designs, it ended at the handle.  There, it seemed to shine.  The crystal was as clear as glass, and inside it was the most beautiful ‘S’ pendant she had ever seen.  Placing the dagger carefully on the night stand, Scarlet lunged at her father, who just barely kept his feet under him.

“I guess you like it then?” he laughed.

“I love it!  I never expected anything like this.  Thank you so much Daddy.”

Still laughing, Killian placed Scarlet back onto her bed.

“I have one more thing to tell you before you go to sleep.  Your mother and I agree that it is time for you to start training.  Your mother will be teaching you to cook, sew, garden, and anything else she thinks you’ll need to know as you grow older.  On top of that, I’ll be working on your fighting skills for a  few hours a day.  Do you think you’ll be able to handle all of that?”

Scarlet nodded, shocked.

“Good.  I’ll start your training when I’m through with my current apprentice.  Maybe a week.  You’ll have to speak to your mother about when she’ll want your training with her to start.  For now, though, I’ll let you sleep.  I love you Scarlet.  Sweet dreams.”

“Sweet dreams Daddy.” She said as the door was closing. “I love you.”

After taking one last look at her beautiful dagger, she carefully put it back on her nightstand and drifted to sleep.
