Musicians that provide live music bring different specialties or particular sets of repertoire to play for you. There are musicians who play nothing but classical pieces, while there others who know only how to play contemporary music, or pop and rock music. On the other hand, there is a special kind of musicians who play both contemporary and classical with equal ease. When a special event or occasion calls for the hiring of live musicians, the best rule of thumb is to choose a musical group based on the age and cultural orientation of your party guests.

If the guests expected to attend an event are mostly educated and conservative middle-age professionals, it is imperative that you get the classical musicians and nothing but. So before contracting a group, ask for a list of the songs they would play. Or better yet, come to their studio personally and request for a sampling of their playing.

The music that play is the kind written by composers in the past few decades, which is aesthetically in the tradition of composers stretching back to people like Brahms, Beethoven, and Mozart. Classical music runs the gamut from esoteric, highly complex "eye music" that is not intended to sound like anything much except to experts, all the way to music that blurs the boundaries between classical and rock or jazz.

Trends are also quite different in different countries. Contemporary European classical music is still very influenced by the mid-twentieth century avant garde, and so is generally less melodic, more textural, and is more likely to incorporate new innovative electronic techniques. To most American listeners, this is that "damn modern music." It is important to remember, though, that from this avant garde tradition have come many now ubiquitous music technologies, such as stereo sound, surround sound, the synthesizer, the sampler, and artificial reverb.

When the party guests are denim-wearing people of college age, your choice of live musicians is of course those that specialize in rock and pop music. This is called contemporary music because it has been written "within our lifetime."

Some General Characteristics of Contemporary Music are:

Fewer lyrical melodies than the music of former periods.Dissonant harmonies.Complex rhythms. Percussiveness. Greater use of woodwind, brass and percussion instruments than in music of earlier periods. The use of synthetic and electronic sounds.

Now, when the party guests are a mix of young and old, professionals and students, you can settle for who are adept at playing both classical and contemporary music. Put together, contemporary classical music is the type often described as devoid of melody and appeal, all noise and no fun. But this is music that is very much at the heart of our modern world.

The style of contemporary classical music is extremely varied. But mostly the term contemporary classical music has come to define the music of living composers who continue to compose in the 21st century. In effect, you will recognize contemporary classical music when you hear it played because the classical pieces still have some contemporary components.
