I knew he was different from the moment he entered my cell. He had slicked back blond hair and bright, vibrant blue eyes. His looks hadn't suggested anything out of the ordinary. It was his eyes; the way they pierced through me and saw into my soul. It was almost as if he could see every mistake, every crime I had committed. It frightened me.
He approached me warily and stuck out a gloved hand. I stared at his hand, confused.
"My name is Troy," he said carefully.
"Delilah," I answered slowly.
"I'm going to take you outside, okay?"
"Sure," I answered. It wasn't like I had a choice. You see, I was in an asylum. They thought I was crazy, but I knew it was all just a misunderstanding. Lately, I'd been feeling unwell. I coughed a lot and was always tired. When I'd told a guard this, they'd only scoffed and told me I was hallucinating.
When Troy and I reached what I called the Outside Door, the one and only door leading outside, he stopped me.
"What?" I demanded, eager to get outside.
"Your outside tracker." Troy answered with a perfect smile and clipped the rough leather strap around my small wrist. Then he led me outside.
I took a hesitant step out the door, the freshly-cut grass tickling the tips of my toes. The sky was a piercing blue, with fluffy white clouds softening the hue. It was beautiful.
