I can't believe she'd do this to me. What did I do to deserve something so cruel?
"Oh. My. God." Riley exclaims. I feel the tears building up in the corners of my eyes.
"She promised that this wouldn't get out. She said I could trust her." I murmur.
"June, please don't do anything rash. It- it couldn't have gotten very far. Just report it and it will go away." Riley suggests, trying to calm my racing mind.
Riley is super optimistic. I'm super depressed. How she can be my best friend, I have no clue.
"That won't work and you know it. There's already been 17 downloads and 13 tags. He's bound to know by now." I point out. My hands shake as I try frantically to report the video. Riley takes the mouse from me and clicks report.
The video vanishes.
I drag in deep breathes through my nose. Calm down. It's gone.
. . . .
"June?" I hear someone call out from down the hallway. I turn on my heels to see who it was.
Oh no. It's him. I quickly turn back around and pick up my pace as I continue down the hallway of the school. The parking lot is just down two more halls, and I'll be out of this hell hole.
"June wait!" He yells. I hear his footsteps thunder down the hall towards me. I walk faster and faster. Does he not understand? Can't he take a hint? I don't want to talk to him.
"June please!" He pleads,"I just want to talk."
I continue on down the hall. A hand lands on my shoulder. I turn. It's Martin. Oh god.
"June... hey..." he says, and let's go of my shoulder. He drags his hand through his shaggy brown hair. My heart beats faster.
"H-h-.." I struggle to say hello.
Did Martin see it?
"Hi", I manage. He looks uncomfortable.
"Um, that video..." he says looking down. Shit. SHIT!
"Did you mean what you said?" He asks. I avoid eye contact. What am I supposed to say? Of course I meant it.
"Um... w-what video.?" I ask. Just make sure.
"The one where you confessed your love for me..." he says.
"Oh that!" Play it cool. "Um well... you see..." I ramble. Why is he so hard to talk to? Get it off your chest. Just tell him.
I sigh. "Yeah I did."
It feels like years that we stand there. Waiting for him to reply.
"Oh."
Oh? Is that all he has to say? I laugh nervously.
"So um..." I try. He just looks at me.
"Well I guess I'd better-"
"I need to go-" we both start talking. I laugh again. I jerk my thumb in the direction of the parking lot.
"Um, bye." He says. I wave because I honestly have no clue if I'm going to be able to speak. Then I hurry down the hall and once I round the corner I run. I'm never going to be able to show my face again.
. . . .
I curl up in my bed and wrap myself in my fluffy baby blanket. Martin knows. And he doesn't care. I pull my hair out of my pony tale and pull off my dad's old baggy sweater. I slip off my jeans and lie there in my underwear and baggy rock n' roll t-shirt. I was having a very lazy day and decided not to try. And this was the day that Martin decides to notice me. I'm screwed.
I grab my laptop off my side table and go onto my Facebook account.
7 tags.
The video has literally gone viral. Tears start streaming down my face. I click on all of the links. Each one is a different parody of my video. Each and every video Martin has seen.
I wipe my eyes. How could Claudia do this to me? This was so long ago. We aren't even friends anymore. She saved the video?
I hear the doorbell ring. Not moving. I hear it ring again and again and again, until I'm too pissed off to stay in bad any longer. I wrap my blanket around me because I'm too lazy to put my jeans back on.
I Crack the door open and pop my head out. It's just Riley.
"You didn't pick me up after school." She says. Crap.
"Yeah about that...." I trail off.
"What?" She asks.
"Martin came up to me in the hall today. And I confessed." I admit.
Riley just stares at me.
"Why?" She asks completely shocked.
"Well I don't know. He just... asked. What else was I supposed to say?" I point out. She ponders over my words for a second, before pushing the door fully open and letting herself in.
She closes it behind her and sticks her index and middle fingers up behind her right ear. That's code for: is there anyone here who shouldn't hear us?
I shake my head. I'm alone. Well I was alone. I pull my blanket up higher around me, wrapping myself in it tighter.
She follows me up the stairs and into my small room. I flop down on my bed again and tap the mouse on my laptop a couple times to get my screen to turn on again. Riley lies down beside me, glancing at the screen.
"I saw already." She tells me. "That's why I came."
Riley scootches closer to me. I feel tears building up inside of me again. My eyes burn as I hold them back, protesting. Let it our June. It's only Riley.
But I know I can't. Pep talks don't work for me; especially when I'm the one who gives them.
"I don't know why she'd do it. I've done nothing to her." I say. Riley snorts.
"Claudia doesn't need a reason to be evil. It's in her nature." She points out. And I know she's right, she is not trustworthy. I guess that's what happens when you like the same guy as someone like Claudia Wrenning.
Claudia Wrenning has the type of personality that girls want to get, and guys want to get with. If I told you that I didn't want to have her life I'd be lying, and I admit that.
I'm probably the opposite.
I have exactly two friends; Riley, and Shane. Shane is funny, and pretty hot honestly. Riley understands me. And Riley and Shane are dating.
Riley is gorgeous! She's always happy, and her smile lights up any room she walks into. She is slim and regular hight, with caramel hair, and hints of golden honey all through it.
Shane is strong and built, and he has short black hair. He is sort of tall, and can wear anything he wants, but he's one of those guys who wants one girl, and only one girl. Riley and Shane are perfect for each other, but when we're together, I never feel like the third wheel. They include me no matter what (even if it's gets really mushy and I wish I could just crawl into a hole).
I on the other hand, am medium hight, with brown, long, hair which needs a trim. My face is covered in freckles and it's pale. I burn easily. I'm thin thank god, with some curves.
And then theres my personality.
I am a complete pessimist. I have almost no friends, because I don't give out trust (That's really stabbing me in the back now). My crush now thinks I'm akward and strange, and I forgot to pick up my own best friend from school because I was caught up in myself! Riley gives, and gives. Yet we are somehow best friends.
"Hey, penny for your thoughts?" Riley asks. I forgot about our conversation.
"Sorry, just thinking about Shane and you." I admit sheepishly. Riley nudges me.
"Jealous?" She teases.
"Yeah." I say. "Martin..." I remind her.
"Oh! I forgot!" Riley exclaims. Just then, as if he knew we were talking about him, Shane calls.
Riley takes out her phone and answers.
"Shayy! I missed you today! Where were you babe?" Riley asks, getting up from the bed and walks out of my room. I hear her talking and giggling all the way down the hall. I roll my eyes. I close Facebook and open Youtube. I click through a bunch of random videos in my recommended. A lot are secret home remedies for depression and how to get a boyfriend. You could say Riley is trying to help me out. You could also say it's failing miserably. Yet she still won't let me give up.
'What boys like in a girl', is the one I click. I turn the volume on my laptop up, but I don't really pay attention to the video.
What does Martin think of me now? Is he discusted? Is he happy? Does he like someone else?
Does he like Claudia? I swear to god...
"Shay I think Ju wants to talk to you." I hear Riley approach. She enters the room and points at the phone, mouthing "talk to Shane?". I hesitate before I nod. Riley then hands me her phone.
"Hey." I say, sounding tired.
"Hey. You ok?" He asks. I hesitate before answering.
"Did you hear about what happend with Martin?" I ask him.
"Yeah. Rie told me." He admits.
"Oh. Well in that case, no." I confess.
"I'm coming over." Shane decides. Before I can protest, he hangs up. I take the phone off my ear and just look at it. Then I glance up at Riley. She looks down at me expectantly.
"Well?" She asks, making a swirling motion with her hand.
"Shay's coming over." I say. "He just hung up on me."
I hand her phone over to her. She takes it and slips it into her pocket.
"Well you'd better put some pants on."
. . . .
Shane plops himself down on my bed, and Riley sits beside him. He pulls her in and half-heartedly kisses her on the forehead, not taking his eyes off me.
"So? What did he say?" Shane asks.
I explain to him about how Martin approached me in the hallway at school, and how I had to tell him the video was real. Shane looks just as shocked as Riley. They exchange looks before he opens his mouth to speak.
"I think I might know why Claudia did this."
