"Myriam!! Your boyfriend brought you a present!!" My cousin Pedro's wife calls to me from the living room.
"He's not my boyfriend!!!!" I jog down the narrow hallway and grab the small, brown box from Kathleen's hands and rip it open. "They're Nintendo 64 games, 'bought these at a garage sell. enjoy!' Sweet!!" the handwriting on the note is almost inllegable.
"Are you sure you two aren't dating yet?"
"I am positive."
"Well you should hurry up and take him while you can; before any girl tries to." she advices while I walk back to my room.
Kathleen's been in love with the kid since the day they met. He was skateboarding past her while she struggled to transport the groceries from the taxi to our kitchen; so he decided to help. That night she practically forced him to stay for dinner, she loves to play "match maker". Everytime she tries to hook up a guy with me, it fails. But this time Peter and I clicked. I mean we're pretty similar; both kinda artsy and introverted.
He likes my mexican accent and the cuban coffee that Kathleen makes (she's half cuban). He also likes my cooking, art work, and thinks that my obsession with Spiderman is a bit weird, but humorous.
Pedro likes him a lot too; he barely sees him though. But he barely sees Kathleen and I because he's never home.
I put the little video game discs with the others and go back into the kitchen. "Do we still have leftover chicken? I'm in the mood for enchiladas."
"I'm pretty sure we do, but make some bean ones too, please." Kathleen's too concentrated in some paper work to even look up.
"You're not gonna help?"
"I wish but I have lots of work to do."
So I call Peter instead, it rings, and rings, and voicemail. So I call again; and again it sends me to voicemail after it rings for a bit. And again. Then I decide to text
[ hey dude!! makin ur FAV food
come over & help or just come over & eat it but hurry before i eat it all first!!!!! ]
/the next day/
My phone violently shakes in the back pocket of my black overall shorts and I check to see that it's a phone call from Peter's Aunt. Luckily we're only watching a movie in art class today so I'm allowed a bathroom pass.
"May? Is everything alright?" I answer quickly once I'm in the nasty pink bathroom.
"Is Peter with you?" she sounds distressed.
"No, we go to different schools, remember?" Peter and I live on opposite sides of the city.
"Yes I know, but he hasn't come home since yesterday and I called up his school and he didn't show up today. So I thought maybe he spent the night at your house."
"No, no no. We've never had-" the thought of it makes my cheeks go red, "No. I did call and text him last night and got no answer. But since he doesn't use his phone much, I thought he just didn't charge it or something."
"I'm going to the police and see if they can help me, you better get back to class." After I say goodbye she hangs up and with my heart pounding and tear stained makeup, I go back to class.

The next 12 hours are complete hell.
It takes me exactly 30 minutes to get home from school and another 30 minutes to pack the backpack I'm taking with me. So I don't leave to search for Peter until it's three p.m.
My shoulders ache at the weight of my backpack. Before leaving I stuffed it with a first aid kit, some granola bars, waterbottles, spicy candy, my sketch book, phone charger, a sweater and my wallet.
After searching around the city for about four hours, I give up. I went to all of his favorite places: the park, library, science museum, the cafes we hang out at, his "secret spot" which is just the roof of my apartment building. But there were no results.
When I get home there's still no news of him, and I'm barely able to touch my quesadillas.
