I gazed out into the infinite abyss of...well, nothing. I was surrounded entirely by a black shroud that was dark enough to make a panther jealous. Worst of all-I had no idea how I got here, who I was, or why I was floating above an endless void of tar-like darkness. The only thing I could make out was the blurry shape of my hands, which I held in front of my face, horribly confused.

My mind swirled like a whirlpool was threatening to drown out everything in my conscience, and the little vision I had was getting blurry around the edges. Needless to say, I was terrified. The only thing I remembered before this was a small sliver of light before my entire world shut off like a heavy wooden door was slammed down on my senses, blocking everything out completely. The air didn't have any density or moisture, yet I was completely comfortable.

How strange. It appeared that I didn't have any sense of touch at all. I was starting to consider attempting to fly around, but at that moment, the dark fog broke away mistily, and I found myself on a cold surface, most likely a tile floor, from what I could feel.

My vision wasn't completely black, but it was blurry, like I'd poured saltwater in my eyes. I blinked a few times. I could feel things squirming around beside me, and once my vision partly cleared, I saw that they were...cats. Kittens, to be exact. And upon further inspection, it was discovered that I was one, too.

This was puzzling, to say the least, but I ignored the buzzing in my brain and started paying attention to the sharp gnawing in my stomach. Hunger. I could smell the sweet scent of milk, and I clambered over my siblings in order to get my first taste of the stuff.

Our mother was a beautiful tortoiseshell cat, and she reached her head over to lick at each of us absentmindedly as we fed. I mewled in surprise as her rough tongue caught onto the back of my neck, momentarily lifting me off the ground.

Suddenly a loud booming echoed through the floor. We all meowed, curious, but Mother got up and paced nervously. Soon the boom-maker, a middle aged man, appeared over us like a giant skyscraper.

I had no idea how I knew what all of these things were. Perhaps I had seen them, in a past life. Which brought to mind the important question. Who was I? Where did I come from? Maybe, I had failed to fulfill something in a different life, and was punished as a cat for this one. Or maybe...

The man's rough hands clamping softly on my sides startled me out of my thoughts. He smiled as he brought me up to his face level, and spoke quietly.

"Hey there, little guy!"

I mewled again to be let down to the warmth of my mother and siblings. He didn't seem to be listening, though, and instead started booming away from our place on the floor, moving towards a different room.

I could see everything from my perch in the man's hands, and I gazed out at a sea of people. They were all being loud and talking boisterously, but most went quiet when they saw us enter. That's right, puny humans. Be afraid. I thought happily, and meowed ferociously at everyone in the room. They only laughed and 'awwww'ed. Humph.

"Okay, first one to open his eyes," The man said, and held me a little higher. I kept surveying the humans as they looked on eagerly. A little boy giggled at me.

"So, Brent, does that mean that the rest of them are healthy?" A woman in a flowered nurse's outfit asked.

"Yeah. You're free to have any. Delilah is enough cat I can take." The man joked. He then softly handed me to the woman who had spoken.

"Oh, you're a cute one, aren't you?" she cooed, and held me close to her. "Will you be a good helper cat? A calm, calm kitty?"

I didn't know what she was saying, so I licked her fingers. She laughed in response, a high, clear ringing of joyous delight that echoed through my brain and sent chills down my back. I liked this lady.

"Brent," she called, which summoned the man who had first picked me up to peek through the doorway.

"Yes, Kelly?"

"How about this one?"

The man, who I had come to know as Brent, that's what they said to call him, strolled across the room and kneeled down to look at me.

"Of course. Hey there, little guy. Are you ready to go to a new home?" He whispered as Kelly began to pull paper out of some kind of tiny bag. "Oh, no, Kelly, you don't need to pay. This one's all yours."

"You sure?"

"Yup," Brent said cheerfully as he stood up. "Tanya and I are happy you can take them."

Kelly walked outside. It was glorious! The air was crisp with smells and sights and tastes! I opened my mouth a little bit so I could taste the scent of something sweet and strong. I followed the scent in my mind to a bush a few feet away that was covered in vibrant purple blooms. How delightful!

Kelly pulled open the door of a large machine. Almost immediately the word 'car' jumped into my thoughts. So THIS was a car. Interesting. She climbed into the front seat and set me in a big cage. I didn't like it one bit. I mewled pathetically as the car rumbled away. I couldn't see ANYTHING!

I was miserable the whole ride. But soon we rumbled up to another house. I could hear the car door slam. I perked my ears, then heard Kelly come back. I screeched in surprise when the cage was lifted into the air.

Kelly walked us over to a house that I could see through a small hole in the cage. She swung the door open, then let me out of the cage.I padded awkwardly out onto the wood floor.

"Welcome home!"
