Leaving

My feet fluttered fast over the sidewalk. Today was my 11th birthday, and the day my dad had a buisness trip. He had told over and over how sorry he was, but I really didn't mind. Afterall, he promised to get me something I would love, and I believe him.

I shut the door with a loud slam before kicking my shoes off. "Mum! Dad! I'm back from school!"

Mom and Dad were in the kitchen, prepping things for my arrival. They seemed a tad worried. "You're... Uh, kind of early, h-huh?" Mom stuttered. It seemed unlike her to be anything unconfident. I observed the kitchen carefully. A large, forest themed cake sat on the table, 11 skinny candles lined it. A couple of present bags lay on the floor and against the wall.

"Should I just go upstairs and wait?" I asked curiously. "No, no, it's fine. Would you like some of your cake?" Dad replied. Something seemed uncomfortably off.

I licked the frosting off my lips, savoring it. I set the paper plate on the kitchen table, grabbing the present my parents were handing me.

"Um... Penny, I have to tell you something important. Very important." I glanced at the gift, than back at him. Worried and concern spread across his face.

He stuttered. "Now, I-I know this won't sit w-well with you, especially on your birthday, but..." Tears formed in his eyes. "I-I... I won't... T-the trip isn't... Isn't..."

He wrapped his arms around me. I felt cold. 'What's wrong with him? Is he dying?' Questions filled my mind. He pulled away. "Penny, I won't... W-won't come back... I'm sorry."
