Chapter 2
Faye was living a nightmare, a nightmare on repeat. Every time things started to get normal, every time she was happy; he came back.
Every time.
Nicolas Dubois was the love of her life, but he was also the one person who never failed to ruin it. He did everything in his power to make sure Faye didn’t find happiness with anyone else. Sometimes she felt that he hated her, but he didn’t. True to his words, Nicolas loved her dearly and no one would ever have her. No one, but him.
Nicolas was a complicated man. Sick and twisted in his own right and being a vampire didn’t help. Nic wanted Faye, his Evelyne, his rose, and he’d be damned if he didn’t get her.
Faye had rushed out of her French History class the second the clock struck 10 o’clock with not so much a glance at Andre’s perplexed face. She felt bad for ignoring him, but what was she supposed to tell him?
Oh, that was just my vampire ex-boyfriend. He’s here to ruin my life, get you fired, and maybe even kill you?
Yea, that would go over well. She hated him for doing this.
It wasn’t long before Faye had made it back into her dorm room. The slam of the door vibrating off the walls as Faye hastily stripped herself of her belongings, including her t-shirt and shorts. It wasn’t until the white shorts had finished sliding down her long legs that she heard it, someone was here.
In the next instant Faye had a man with brown hair and chiseled features pushed against the wall, her hand wrapped firmly around his neck.
“What the fuck is this? Surprise a vampire day?” She says with sarcasm and attitude before releasing her grip on him.
The man begins rubbing his neck with a faint look of pride on his face.
“I thought I could be of some assistance.” His voice low, a hint of an English accent peeking through.
Faye throws her hands in the air with aspiration, “My god, Gabriel! You can’t be here. Leave.”
“I see Nic managed to arrive first then,” He comes to stand right up against her placing his hand on her cheek, “I want only to help you, Faye. That is your name now, yes?”
Faye finds herself leaning into his touch.
“I have missed you greatly, my dear.” His voice is warm against her face, “May I kiss you,” he asks, always the gentleman.
Faye finds herself slowly nodding, knowing she shouldn’t, but as his lips softly meet hers all thoughts disappear. She had always wondered what would have happened had she met Gabriel first. Would she have fallen in love with him and had her ever after? Even as a vampire?
Life had been cruel to them. They had both wanted to fall in love and be married, they wanted families. Not this, they hadn’t chosen to be vampires. It was a choice that had been made for them. Gabriel had accepted it, while Faye still chose to find happiness with a human.
A kiss with Gabriel was sweet and gentle definitely not something you’d expect from a vampire, especially not one of his age. Gabriel had been around a long time, much longer than herself or Nic, it made him stronger than any of them. Despite this he had always been a gentle lover almost as if he were still human, but with the experience of many lifetimes.
“Get it, girl.” Faye hears a sassy voice snapping her out of her trance and her kiss with Gabriel.
She wasn’t sure when they had made it to the bed, but the sound of her roommate and best friend’s voice made her more than aware.
She avoided looking at Gabriel as she peeked around him to see her roommate leaning against the bedroom door.
“I thought you had class now, Andrea.” Faye states as she pushes Gabriel off of her. She hears him let out at sigh as the rustling of his clothes being fixed hits her ears.
“Yeah… about that,” Andrea pauses at she admires Gabriel’s looks before smirking at her roommate, “I decided not to go and boy am I happy I didn’t. I can leave if you want? Let you get back to your rendezvous?”
France 1532
Evelyne is only seventeen when she first meets Gabriel Vernande at a meeting of the French and English courts. The King of England is rallying support from her father, her king. She noticed Gabriel was among the men present when he first began to talk to her love, Nicolas. It wasn’t until much later had she been called over to meet him.
“Mademoiselle Pomeroy. It would give me great pleasure to introduce the Gabriel Vernande, the Duke of Jameson.” Faye didn’t turn her attention to Gabriel until long after Nic had stopped talking. When she did, she found Gabriel staring at her with some odd fascination before shaking his head at Nic.
It wasn’t her place to question it she thought before curtsying and offering her hand to the man with chiseled features. Evelyne found herself glancing up to meet his calming brown eyes just as he placed a gentle kiss on the top of her hand. She jerked her hand back with surprise at the shock that ran through her before pretending to fix her dress.
“Eeet ees an honor to meet you, Monsieur.” Evelyne’s voice is raspy with her French accent coming through strongly.
It wasn’t long before she heard the gentleness of Gabriel’s English accent. His voice was tranquil and every bit collected.
“The honor is all mine to meet a young women as handsome as yourself,” He causes Evelyne to blush and look away, “Would you care to dance, Mademoiselle?,” Gabriel pauses before turning to look at Nic, “That is if it is alright with you, Nicolas.”
Nicolas glances across the room before setting his eyes on Charlotte de Foix, a lady-in-waiting, and nodding at Gabriel, “All is fine with me my dear friend. I have something I must attend to immediately,” He places a hand on Evelyne’s shoulder to get her attention, “Stay with Gabriel, my dear. I shall be back soon.”
Evelyne nods as Nic takes his leave and Gabriel offers her his hand, “Shall we?”
Gabriel watches the frail young girl as she takes his hand. He feels an overwhelming need to protect her not only from Nicolas, but from himself. What Nicolas was doing was dangerous. He would ruin her.
He watches her as they dance; her expertise at performing a dance of the high court astounds him for she is only the Kings bastard. Evelyne was something rare. She was educated, kept in the same quarters as His highness, The King of France, and his true family, and most importantly allowed to be seen at court. He wanted to know more about this child that had claimed so many hearts to be welcomed and taught as such of a true royal.
It had never been done before her. It never would be again.
As the dance came to an end and Evelyne began to take her leave, he spotted Nicolas making his way towards them. Gabriel held onto her hand, using it to pull her close enough to warn, “Be careful, my dear, he is not what he seems.”
Evelyne wouldn’t know what he meant until a few years had passed and even longer before she ever laid eyes on Gabriel Vernande again.
Present Day
Faye stood at the end of her bed with a hand on her hip and a glare firmly planted in Gabriel’s direction. Andrea had long since taken her leave after Faye slammed the door in her face.
“This can’t happen, Gabriel. Not again. I’m happy now.” She shakes her head sadly.
Faye watches him stand with ease before promptly standing in front of her. He makes his way past her only stopping to whisper in her ear, “If that were true. You would not have let me kiss you.”
Gabriel continues his way out of her room stopping only once more to say gently, “You know where to find me when Nicolas becomes too much to handle.”
