without each other,
we would fall apart.
lost in a void unending,
devoid of any feeling.

together,
we bind each other into being.
through the forces of gravity and love:
we exist.

fuelled only by nuclear fission and determination,
we shine light into each other's lives,
searing the heavenly firmament,
with our electromagnetic aspirations.

had we the vision and perspective,
of a creator's creator's divine creator,
we would see the cosmic majesty
that we compose when we align:

a symphony of rolling swirls and curls,
glowing clouds floating through
a fine bright mist of gleaming lights,
spinning to the beat of our hydrogen hearts.

ii

although we are but tiny specks of light,
surrounded by a sea of darkness,
we will always emerge victorious,
even when our lights go out.

the heartless obsidian ocean,
will never have the sentience to comprehend,
the vibrant emotions,
of our momentary lives.

(a thousand times more vibrant
than any supernova)

those closest to us,
pull on us the hardest,
supporting our orbits as we support theirs,
even when we threaten to collapse.

and after we are gone,
there will be others to take our place,
while the tales of our lives
travel through the lightyears.

iii

we are all doomed,
to collapse upon our weight and explode,
leaving death and radiation in our wake,
so that those like us may form again:

from death comes life,
from life comes light,
from light comes darkness,
and from darkness comes death.

(or was it the other way around?)

we weren't born to last forever:
we were born to burn and burst.
we were born to sear and singe and hope and dream,
to learn and love and and never ever give up.

we are destined
to incinerate our surroundings,
only to rebuild anew,
from the ashes of our phoenix hearts.

a single graviton can make a world of difference.
we wouldn't be the same without the stars that surround us,
radiating life into life,
making this cruel and empty world the greatest one there is.

we all are stars,
made of starstuff,
burning with unbridled passion,
despite our waxen wings.

i dedicate this book to every Star I've ever met,
whether our orbits are binary or elliptical,
thank you,
for illuminating my life.

my world would not be the same without you.
