Chapter 1

(A/N So I wrote this a while back. It's a story idea I came up with very quickly. I will continue writing as much as I can and any feedback to help me would be great!)

Cold wind blew as the last glimmer of sunlight faded below the treetops. The golden light set fire to the autumn leaves, making a breathtaking scene.
As beautiful as it was, I had only a few moments to enjoy it. Down the slope from where I stood, there was a small structure. Graffiti decorated the sides and a few cracks let light out. It was where our bounty was hiding. It was a female demon, who would apparently be easily identifiable by her short red hair. Jace appeared behind me, touching my shoulder.
"You ready?" He asked. I nodded, looking down the slope at the building again.
Jace held his long hunting knife. The blade was carved with banishment sigils, and the handle a rough red leather. I carried a heavy black sketchbook in my hands, the cover carved intricately with a banishing pentacle. Inside held all of the knowledge we had gained about demons, and how to banish them. Gripping it tightly, I began to walk down the hill, my hiking boots crunching on the orange and yellow leaves. The sky was now fading to an inky purple, and a sudden chill went down my spine.
You could smell the den from quite a bit away. The stench of sweat,  human waste and what I imagine was drugs, wafted from the cracks. Jace stepped ahead of me and opened the door. It creaked loudly, but as we entered it did not matter. There was no one conscious there. A small yellow light blinked in the corner, and the walls were a dirty yellow stone. Along them were a few drugged out people, mumbling and drooling. We walked quietly past them. As we went by the last one, a girl about twenty or so, I noticed something.
I told him to stop. Leaning down, I looked at her arm. Spreading  from the obvious injection point, was a web of blue-black veins. I knew immediately what she had taken. On the streets it was called Ember. I knew it to really be demon blood, which was toxic, but a powerful relaxer and hallucinogenic. It had become widespread across the Purgatory Coast almost as soon as demons realized they could get money for it. After the initial rampage, demons realized they couldn't leave or return to hell, so they cohabitated, which led to problems like these. I stood up.
"So fucking gross." Jace said and continued walking. As distributing Ember was illegal, by human and demons agreement, I asumed that was why we were there. To Banish the dealer.
Down a dirty, shaded hallway, we heard a radio playing softly. Jace looked at me and we silently followed the sound, and the crack of light under the door. As we got closer, the song was made out to be an old rock tune. Pushing open the door, we saw the red haired woman sitting at a desk.
She was measuring vials of a dark black liquid, placing them into neat holders. It took a while but I noticed that on the left side of the room there was a bloodletting chair. A wicked needle, connected to a long tube sat on a tray with other tools. Jace screwed up his freckled nose.
"Hey, Heisenberg. You wanna put that down?" Jace yelled and slammed the door. The woman shot up, knocking down the neatly stacked vials that crashed on the ground. Black Ember splashed across the rugged concrete floor. She looked startled but quickly turned her face into a sneer.
"You really should watch who you mess with." She looked at the knife in his hand. "And little boys shouldn't play with knives." With unnatural speed, she punched my chest. I felt wightless as I flew backwards, slamming unto the wall. Pain spread across my back as I fell to the floor. I watched through blurry vision as she swung at Jace, and he blocked and returned. They fought fiercely, as I tried to get up and breathe.
Jace spared a moment to look at me, and roared as a thick nail sliced his neck. The demon screeched, her eyes black, veins running through her pale face. With a crash, Jace threw her onto the bloodletting chair. She fell on the armrest, hitting her back and toppling to the floor. As Jace ran up to her, she grabbed his leg tripping him. He landed next to her and she pushed him against the floor. With overly large jaws, she bit into his shoulder. He let out a pained roar as warm blood soaked his shirt. That was enough motivation for me to face the nausea and struggle up. I took a deep breath and managed to speak. I repeated the words I had said during all my previous banishments.
"Revertimini est infernum. Foeda corrupta est dæmonium immundum." The demon flinched and looked towards me, Jace's blood dripping from her mouth. As she was distracted, Jace stabbed her chest with his knife. She screamed and fell off him grabbing wildly at the blade. As she pulled at the knife, her hands sizzled and burned at the touch of the glowing orange sigils. She let go and with pained, staccato movements, crawled towards me. I chanted faster, backing up.
"Et revertimini ad infernum. Patria vestra, et mortem. Ego te convertentur. Ego te convertentur." She fell, her hands crumbling to black ash, and fire shining inside her.
"This isn't the end, there are more of us, and soon there will be many. We cannot be contained. Nos legionibus." She smiled through black teeth as her face crinkled and fell in pieces of ash.
Her skeleton shone through, and I had to cover my eyes as a whoosh of air and flame reduced her to a pitch-dark cinder pile. I looked down at the smoking embers. It was a black stain on the ground, not much better than what she was before.
"What was that?" Jace asked, looking at me. "Nos legionibus?"
He never learned latin like I did. I recognized it after a second, its meaning sending a chill up my spine.
     "It means "We are legion.""
