"Happy birthday, James!" Say Mum and Dad. They present a small, round chocolate cake to me. It has white icing on the edge that's in a beautiful swirl. "Thanks Mum, thanks Dad." I take a plate from a cupboard in the kitchen, I also grab a fork from the top drawer. I rush back to the dining room with my plate and fork. I take a small slice out of the cake and put it on my plate. I take a small chunk from my slice. It's delicious the icing is so creamy and the rest is so spongy. "This is the best cake I've ever had!"
Mum is pleased, overjoyed more accurately. I can tell by the look on her face , she must have made it herself. "Your mother made it herself you know, son." Dad says.
"I thought so." I knew it!
A few hours later we put on our jackets and we leave the house for a walk. The army is marching past our door. "They really do think we'll probably declare war on Germany, don't they?"
"Yes, they certainly do."
Time is flying by as we walk. But we keep seeing soldiers everywhere. Some are carrying sand bags and making little walls in streets with barbed wire as well. And others are in trucks, or transporting artillery guns. Oh, I have Scouts later, maybe I'll learn a bit about the whole thing. You'd think that the government's keeping a secret...
