I have always been uncomfortable of how people look at me. They stare in complete shock seeing Flynn White, the Armor Officer that has saved countless lives in battle. But I don't see myself like that. I see myself as any ordinary person. I went to school, I read books, I even have a little sister. I do things that anybody else would do. But, I guess it just doesn't work for me. If I had one wish, it would be for people to stop saying that I am superior to everyone else in my category. Because I'm not.
The crew and I hop on the UH-60, also known as the Black Hawk. I look down at my burgundy boots. The leathery fabric makes them shine perfectly in the sun. My glance soon focuses on the steel steps leading to the seats of the helicopter. My vision returns to the inside of the aircraft, my friends motioning me to come forward. Step by step, I walk up the stairs. My boots make a clanging sound every time I proceed upwards. Clang! Clang! Clang! But then I pause. Hesitant, I tell myself, Why am I doing this? Before I could make any last minute decisions, I feel a tap on my right shoulder. I turn only to see my friend Mark and a long line of soldiers behind me.
"Nervous?" Mark responds in a annoyed tone.
Mark was a partner of mine back in 2010, when I first joined the military. He is one of the top officers in our league. Many people look up to him, including myself.
"Y...Yeah."
"There's no need to panic. We've done this many times before."
"Yeah, I guess. Thanks Mark."
"Anytime," he replies.
The warmth of Marks' hand soon vanishes. I take a deep breath and I advance forward. The cool air inside Black Hawk brushes the tips my nose. I take a seat closest to the window and I look at the surroundings outside our facility. The cacti stand still and the little desert blossoms sway back and forth, almost like a swing at a playground. I reach for my satchel which was perched on my leg. I pull the edges of it back, revealing all of the necessities for the trip. Basic things, like a toothbrush, a water pouch, sunglasses, some ammunition for the caliber, and of course a picture of my family.
The last soldier from our category soon climbs aboard the chopper. The rusted doors close with a rush of the cool desert breeze coming in. The pilot counts down;
10...9...8...7...6...5...4...3...2...1...-Blast off.
I notice Officer Cox waving at the soldiers. His once blurry image soon becomes smaller and smaller and then it disappears. I exhale loudly and I slouch on the wool seats. The whispers of the other passengers is unbearable to me. I reach for my satchel once again and I pull it's sides. I shuffle through it only to pull out my leather sunglass case. I carefully place it back inside and I rummage around the inside. My fingers touch a smooth and round figure. Just what I needed. I yank my phone out of it's position and I start to unfold the earbuds. Once neatly unraveled, I place them on my ears. I turn on my phone and I work up Pandora. I press listen.
Staring at two different views on your window ledge,
Coffee has gone cold, it's like time froze,
There you go wishing, floating down our wishing well...
...I'll promise to build a new world,
For us two,
With you in the middle...
