My Taking

Sleep deprived, my mind could not wrap around what was happening.

Mom, is that you?

I slurred the question out.

The person didn't stop shaking me.

My eyes opened hesitantly to see it was no one I knew.

I gasped in shock.

It was a policeman.

To be more accurate, a Juvey-Cop.

My light was flicked on and I had to shield my eyes as I felt my pupils shrink from the brightness.

"Let's go, kid."

What did he say?

"Come on!"

He didn't wait for me to get out of bed.

I was yanked out to find another cop standing nearby.

My Mom was standing in the doorway of my bedroom.

"What's going on?" I asked, still dazed.

God, I must've looked a mess.

As I adjusted to the abrupt awaken state, I could tell that my Mom was upset.

"Mom?"

She turned away.

"I'm sorry, I can't..."

She walked away.

"Mom!"

"Shut it, kid," the cops told me, cuffing me.

Was this the end?

As the cops pulled me out of my room, I glanced at a quote that was framed on my wall.

This is not the end, this is the beginning.

What kind of beginning was this?

"What's going on? Please tell me!"

I was scared, but I didn't admit that.

Although it was probably plastered on my face.

"You're being taken to a Harvest Camp."

"What?"

What?

What?

What?

"B-But..."

It sounded like the cop was almost annoyed with me.

"But what?"

"Can't I at least get dressed? Why is this happening so fast? What's going on? I'm so confused."

"Clothes will be provided for you where you're going."

What?

"Mom!"

She was nowhere in sight as I was taken out of my own home.

The home I'd lived in for fourteen years.

"Max!" I yelled towards my dog who yapped at the door as I'm thrown into a cop car.

Are these things always done so quickly?

Easy, quick, and over with.

Good God, this is real.

This is my new beginning.

A long, awkward, scary car ride with Juvey-Cops.

I was unwound after a few weeks.

Easy, quick, and over with.
