She fought hard not to roll her eyes. “Why would that be?” she asked dryly.
Emerald eyes glinted at her as a tongue flicked over his lips. “You’re amusing and I rather like having something new every once in a while.”
Nothing like being made to sound like a pet and an entrée in the same sentence.
She bit the inside of her lip to keep a threatening growl from erupting out of her throat. The hairs on the back of her neck were standing at attention just from his phrasing. Memories. She veiled her gaze with thick lashes. She wasn’t in any position to be sucked back into those horrid visions. So, steeling herself against the squall of turmoil building within her form, she flashed a fake smile, tilting her head to the side. “Glad to be of service.” She answered politely. Perhaps the affect was dimmed a bit as she deftly tossed back the rest of the drink she’d been cradling. She loathed the burn of it against her throat but somehow the stinging sensation bolstered her spirits.
“So,” she began, “What do you boys do for a living anyways?” her eyes flicked around the gathered faces nonchalantly. Her hand placed the now empty glass delicately upon an edge of the table and she leaned coyly back on one arm. “I mean, besides bloodying up people you don’t like and others you do.”
“Curiosity killed the cat.” A man spat. Her eyes appraised him pensively, seemed like he’d reverted from his former purple visage. What a pity.
“Good thing I’m not a cat then.”
Her Cheshire-Cat grin offset such a statement but she couldn’t help herself. If she was going to be forced to sit here for hours on end she might as well gather some information while she was at it. If these men didn’t have connections throughout the underground and black-market she’d slit her wrists and lay out on a secluded street for a seemingly normal passerby to sample.
The old man that had forbade her from speaking before looked her over pensively, as if weighing her worth by image alone.
“Perhaps…another time.” He finally stated. Her brow twitched in irritation.
‘This Old man….’ Her thoughts were practically a growl rumbling through her head like thunder. But she was in no position to protest as, just as fast as he’d focused on her, his attention shifted elsewhere. His gaze turned to Roku and her boss tilted his chin ever so slightly upwards when he noticed.
