Rocky Mountains, Colorado, 1863

Hunger. It consumed him. Every fiber in his body was telling him to eat, making it so that every waking moment he was thinking about food. He dreamt about what it was like to be human, being able to eat things like beef, bowls of warm stew with a side of mashed potatoes, or even soft pastries. But he couldn't eat those things, he wasn't human. He was a ghoul. Fish tasted too fishy, eating grilled steak tasted like you were biting into a piece of charcoal. Cheese always smelled like it had rotted in a sewer for over a century, and the texture of bread was so... spongy. The only thing that tasted normal was coffee, but what he really craved was human flesh.

He ate the bark off of trees, wishing it was meat, and gnawed on stray twigs he found lying in the snow, imagining they were bones he could eat the marrow out of. But nothing helped, the hunger still consumed him, his body aching for the taste of flesh. At the end of the day, tears always ended up streaming down his face. It wasn't fair, why did he have to be this thing? This... monster.

Months ago, he had followed a guide into the forest, along with a group of people. The guide had promised he would take them to a cabin, where they could get plenty of food and supplies to last them through the long, treacherous winter. After about three weeks, they had gotten lost, and on top of that, they had run out of food. The group decided they would sacrifice people, so the others could eat. This was perfect for Kol, he was going to have to kill someone anyways.  The only thing he could eat was the meat off of humans. The first person to die was a twelve year old boy named Leroy. Next was Patrick, who wandered off from the group and came back cold as ice. He died moments later. The most recent death was a middle-aged man, Anthony, who had made weapons for everyone. Kol had torn off chunks of the man's side, savoring each and every bite. The remaining people decided to wait and eat whoever died next. They continued to trek through the snow, too tired to look for the valley were supposed to be searching for. The cold snow crunched below their aching feet as they walked deeper and deeper into the mountains. One night, the hunger started to get out of control for Kol. As everyone gathered around the fire they had made that night, he noticed two men in the group eyeing him. He guessed that he was next to be sacrificed. He stood up and walked towards the two, a rifle in hand. The men pulled out their knives, but knew they were no match for the creature standing in front of them. So they ran.

Kol followed them, their stench wavered through the air as he tracked them through the ice-crusted snow. Looking down, he could see a track of bloody footprints from one of the men. The ghoul followed the tracks for hours, soon leading to an icy cave. A figure could be seen huddling in a corner, waiting out its death. Kol approached him, his eyes glowing a bright red. He tore through the man's flesh, devouring him in under a minute. The blood of the other man could easily be smelt by the still hungry ghoul. He followed the strong smell, soon finding the man hiding behind a tree. Kol shot him in the back, his victim's barbaric screams echoing through the mountains. The blood slowly seeped into the snow, as the monster approached the body. His blood-red eyes explored his food, already tasting the warm flesh in his mouth. Maybe, after all, he could survive this winter.
