Bishamon sat on the train, on her way home. She had her hands folded on her lap, and her eyes were trained on everything outside. The sun was setting, giving the city a pinky-orange hue. The train was bustling with people, from tired to wired people, old to young people. She had her earphones in, letting the music fill her ears instead of boring conversations from strangers. Her eyelids drooped slightly, but someone shuffling through the crowded train bumped into her shoulder by mistake. The elderly woman apologises, then continues to make her way through the sea of people. As she watches the woman fade into the crowd, her mind wanders to how everything at home is going. She is twenty-one, yet she still lives with her father. He is sixty-two, and is suffering from lung cancer. Her mother and sibling, whom she is not familiar with and only had vague memories of, are not in contact with her. So, she is alone taking care of her sick father. Sometimes, she wonders where her mother and sister are, but it's pointless. She'll never see them again, and she knows it.

A flock of birds fly across the sky, right over the low dipping sun. That's when the train begins to come to a halt, and she rises. She gently pushes past people, "excuse me, please." She says in a soft voice every now and then to be polite. She glances over here shoulder, and sees people fighting over her seat. As she exists the crowded train, coldness clings to her. She folds her arms over her chest, then exhales. Her foggy breath lingers in front of her, then evaporates.

She leaves the train station, and begins walking home. She stops at the boom gates, and the ringing starts. She holds her bag close to her side, and pulls out her phone. She turns off her music, then pulls her earphones out. She then stuffs them both back into her bag, then looks up to see her train passing right in front of her. As she stares blankly at it, waiting for it to pass, she thinks of all the kids at the orphanage. She's been a secretary at the orphanage for six months, and she also regularly spends time with some of the kids. Lately, she's been noticing how depressed the kids are getting. They are growing bored, and upset because they do not have a family to call their own. Everyday, she witnesses a child crying and begging for their parents to come back. But they never do. Kazuma, a co-worker, is a care taker. He is always taking care of the kids when they are in need, and it's always done with kindness. Bishamon admires him, she wishes she could always be as kind as him, and always be smiling.

The boom gates go up, and she crosses the track. As her eyes trace the ground in front of her. Her father is always encouraging her to find a fine man, get married and have children with. That isn't what she wants, though. Her father has come down to the orphanage on more than one occasion. Each time he witness how well Kazuma and Bishamon get along, he always tells her what a fine man he is and that they would be perfect together. Bishamon always laughs him off, and says that they are only friends, and that's the way it is staying. Her father would scowl and act all serious, which irritated her. But she would just roll her eyes and continue with her work.

A pang of pain dashed across her chest when she realised that her father can't leave the house whenever he pleases anymore. It has to be organised a few days prior, to get everything all set. He needs oxygen tanks with him always, and his wheelchair. So, because she doesn't have a car and is not entirely someone with the best bank account, they can't optimistically just leave the house.

After walking for around fifteen minutes, she arrives at home. It's almost dark by now, and only the street lights are lighting the house up. She takes the key out of her bag, then unlocks the door. It swings open slowly, giving an eerie creak as it does so. She then slowly steps inside, assuming her dad is asleep. All the lights are out, except for one in the kitchen. As she makes her way inside the house, she flicks lights on her way. She slowly makes her way to her father's room, and peeks in. At first, her eyes see nothing but darkness. But as her eyes adjust to the darkness, she sees a figure laying in bed in the corner of the room. She makes her way towards it, and sees her father lying on the bed in an odd way. She arches an eyebrow, then leans toward him. She placed a hand on his forehead, then notices that he is sweating quite a lot. That's when she realises; the only breathing she can hear is hers. Her heart begins to race, so she swiftly places her hand on his neck, feeling for a pulse. After a few seconds of trying, she eventually finds one. Quite dull, though. And his breathing is so slow and small, she didn't even notice till now.
