It seemed like a normal day. Home to school, school to home. But I HAD to be stubborn. Typical me, Hadley Harrison. If I knew what was going to happen, I would have let Caleb drive. Don't get me wrong, he's ok now (and dear God I'm thankful for that), but it still shakes me up.
It was a year ago today. We were leaving school, Kelly High, in our city of Providence, Rhode Island. Caleb and I had been dating almost a year. He didn't have soccer practice that day because it was raining. We were going to my house for homework (we didn't have much, today was the last day before Spring Break), and he said,
"Hey, I'll drive today. You drive yourself home everyday, and today is the one day I don't have practice, so you can get a break."
"No Caleb." I responded. "Like you said, I drive myself home everyday and today is no exception. Although this time I'll have someone to talk to."
He tried to get me to crack, and I should have let him. " No. I'm driving today Hadley, no exceptions. I tried to be nice." He said in that silly, playful voice that always brings a smile to my face.
"I'm driving Caleb. And there's nothing you can do about it if I'm in the drivers seat!!"
Then I took off towards my blue Ford as fast as I could. I jumped in the drivers seat and locked my door before Caleb could open it and carry me out.
"HA. That's what you get for being sloooooow." I told him, holding out that last word.
"Fine, you win this time Hadley Harrison. But I'll get you next time." Caleb told me, that playful grin on his tan face. He got in the car and I pulled out of the school parking lot.
I lived about fifteen minutes from the school. Fifteen minutes isn't all that long, but I didn't know I wasn't going straight home.
