I woke up. Chaos, everything was chaos. I sat there, on the red clay in this scorched world. Then, I remembered. I jerked to my feet and called out, "Sarah!" I frantically searched the area, then once more I yelled for her. "Sarah! It's Lacy, your older sister!"
2 weeks earlier
I awoke, with the sun streaming on my face. I looked around the small wooden shack of a place my sister and I called home. There were two beds and no electricity, unless you count the 35 minutes of running water our greedy governor gives us. Just as I started to go outside to get the eggs for breakfast, Sarah came to the house. As she came bursting through the door, she had feathers in her hair, dirt on her knees, and eggs in her arms. Then, in a bright tone with a smile on her face she exclaimed,
"I got breakfast."
was only nine years old and I was sixteen. When I was 12 and she was 5, our mother was brutally murdered, because she wasn't able to pay our house's rent. No one was charged for my mother's murder, because our society is broken down and unfixable. I was even a witness to her murder. The gruesome sight will never leave my mind, but right before she died she put her compass necklace around my neck and told me to never lose my way. Then, about 3 years later the same man slaughtered my father. Once again for the same reason.
2 weeks later
I ran around the wasteland in which we lived. The world and society were like this only because our government decided to launch enough nuclear weapons to shake the earth onto Russia. They hacked our weapons system, fired them back to us, and then launched their own. Now, everything was baked by the sun as if the sun had moved another million miles closer to us. During the commotion of our city being destroyed, I was separated from Sarah, my sister. I called for her once more
"Sarah!"
Then I heard it. Her scream.
"Lacy! Help me!"
The sound of my sister's screams gave me the chills as I followed her voice in a full out sprint to find her. I turned the corner and there she was in a transport truck. On the side of the truck, there was the Russian flag. She saw me. I yelled to her, "Sarah, just hang on!"
The back of the truck was open, so I decided to make a break for it.
"Lacy! Help."
Sarah screamed from the back of the truck. I sprinted for the truck, timing it just right. I had one shot at getting my sister back. hen I was finally within distance, I counted to myself, "1...2...3... Now!" I leaped for the truck. I made it. I scanned the inside of the truck. People, there were more people.
Then gratefully Sarah replied, "Thank God you're here, I have been in this truck for two days. I thought you wouldn't find me."
While I was untying her, I told her in almost a mumble.
"There is one thing you can bet your life on, I will never leave you."
As Sarah and I untied the others, I noticed that there was about 4 Sarah's age and 2 my age. They were all bound by the wrists and ankles to prevent jumping from the truck. Once everyone was untied, I screamed
"On my count jump! 1...2...3... Now!"
We all leaped from the truck. Some hit the ground hard wounding themselves, others rolled, and some landed on their feet. Some of the children wandered away and others huddled in a circle with Sarah and I.
I decided to take charge of what was going on. "Okay, here's how this is going to work. You are going to say your age and what you remember about who took you."
Sarah decided to go first. When she stood forward I noticed how dirty we both were. Her bright green shirt had turned to a mucky brown, and my baby blue tank top was just as dirty as hers. Sarah continued on.
"My name is Sarah, I am 9 years old. I remember a Russian man coming up behind me while I was looking for Lacy at the town hall right before the launch, and the man snatched me. He roped my feet then roped my hands. The man threw me into the truck. There was only one other person in there besides me. I was in there for 2 days.
Then everyone else told their name and story. There was a 17 year old girl named Elissa, a 15 year old boy whose name was Aaron, and lastly a 6 year old girl named Mackenzie.
