Chapter 2 Truth or Dare

The next morning, after eating some Captain Crunch and showering, I pulled on some sweats and a hoodie.  It was already almost one so I decided to get ready for our big sleepover tonight.  The girls would come over around five.  I cleaned my room, even though we were sleeping in the big den, and the rest of the house was pretty clean.  I ordered pizza to come around six and charged my camera, cell phone, laptop, and iPod.  I knew all four would be used a lot tonight.  Searching through my closet, I picked out a pair of black Capri’s and a green quarter-sleeved shirt to wear for the rest of the day.  I also pulled out my blue and yellow smiley face pajamas and blue fuzzy slippers for later.

After preparing everything and finishing some homework, Gabby arrived about twenty minutes early.  We picked out a bunch of movies and set out the soda and snacks.  The door bell rang and I let in Erika, Bailey, and Kayla, Mason’s sister.  She is also one of our closer friends.  Through the night we ate, laughed, played games, and talked a lot.  Around eleven I put some popcorn in the microwave and Gabby suggested a game of truth or dare.  I didn’t mind playing, but I would rather play mafia or president.  Nevertheless, everyone agreed and a game began.  Erika was dared to drink a strange mixture of Gabby’s made with orange juice, ketchup, root beer, salt, and who knows what else.  She almost threw up, but swallowed it all.  Kayla chose truth and was forced to finally admit who she liked.  After some begging and arm twisting, she told us she kind of had a crush on Josh, Gabby’s older brother.  I had always suspected that.  Suddenly Gabby turned to me asking, “Truth or dare, Hayden?”

I looked at her scheming brown eyes and decided to go for dare, because I remembered that I never did finish telling her who I liked yesterday.  I wouldn’t tell them all now.  “Dare.” I said boldly.  She scrutinized my face for a moment and then turned to the girls to deliberate.  I tensed as I waited for a long minute or two.  Gabby looked back at me and giggled.  I sighed.  “Just tell me what I have to do! “ I groaned.

“Hayden, you have to,” she paused for dramatic effect, “call one of the guys and tell whichever guy it is that you are afraid of the thunder and lightning outside and needed to talk to someone big and strong.”  She exaggerated the last few words.  I thought about this.  It wasn’t that bad.  I had expected worse, but I didn’t say anything.  I picked up my phone and looked through my phonebook.  I decided to call Alex, thinking he was safest because he was a couple years younger and kind of quiet.  I put it on speakerphone and dialed his number on private.  After three rings, I heard someone pick up and say hello.  I froze, almost a hundred percent sure it was not Alex.  I recognized the voice too well.  It was his older brother James, the youth leader I had a crush on.  I wanted him to think of me as mature and not a silly little girl, but I knew I had to do it if I wanted to keep this crush a secret as well.  The girls held in giggles as they too realized who it was.  James said hello again, bringing me back to reality.  I sucked n my breath and disguised my voice as a little girl.

“I’m scared!  The thunder is loud and the lightning is scary.  I need a hug!!” I whined into the phone, hoping he wouldn’t recognize my voice.  “I’m sorry little girl.  Who is this exactly?” James question.  “This is, um, Sally,” I tried to think quickly.  “Please help me!”  I added with a squeal.  I heard him sigh and reply, “Okay Sally, you need to go find your parents.  Don’t be afraid.  They can help you.  I don’t even know you.”  I held in my laughter and replied in the little girl voice but creepier, “Well I know you, James Ryan Kingston.”  I heard him gasp and then I hung up before we all exploded with laughter.  As soon as we could breathe again, Bailey said, “That was hysterical, Hayd.  I wish I could have seen his face.”  We all laughed more.

At about four in the morning, we started settling into our sleeping bags and watching another movie.  I didn’t notice how tired I was until then, so we all fell asleep soon after.  I woke at about eleven in the morning on Friday.  Erika was up and dressed already.  I realized she and Gabby had to leave soon.  I woke a grumpy Gabby and sent her to get dressed.  The two left within the hour before Kayla and Bailey even woke up.  The rest of the day was spent playing guitar hero and eating cold pizza.  Around four, Bailey and Kayla and I cleaned up a little bit.  It was a mess!  We changed our clothes and got ready for youth group.

Bailey wore a blue and white striped tank top with jean Capri’s and black flats.  She borrowed my dark blue hoodie because it was getting chilly outside.  Kayla had on a white t-shirt and black skinny jeans with her favorite purple hoodie and high-top converses.  I decided to wear a white quarter sleeve shirt and jeans with a pretty colorful scarf.  I love accessories.  We had plenty of time so we began giving each other makeovers.  I did Bailey’s makeup, using more natural colors and not as much as she loads on.  At first she kept wanting more, but when I showed her the finished product she loved it.  She did Kayla’s makeup, a little heavy but not too bad.  Kayla did mine and it looked very pretty.  We took lots of pictures and videos.  I decided to straighten my practically straight hair and added some light curls at the bottom.  Kayla clipped her bangs up and Bailey left hers down.  When we were all done, we left for youth group.  We were early so we stopped for Starbucks on the way.

I parked my red Toyota close to the front and we walked inside.  We were only a few minutes early so many people were just arriving.  At youth group we normally go around seven and hang out there until about eight when the service starts.  So today we went in and started talking to Chloe, one of the youth leaders.  James was already there and he was setting up the stage for tonight.  I walked over to help him.

“Hey James. What’s up?” I asked casually.  “Oh, hey Hayden. Not much, just setting up.” He looked at me and added, “I like your scarf.”  I blushed and thanked him.  We finished setting up and I asked if he wanted to play a game of basketball with some of us.  We got together a few girls and a bunch of guys to play.  I was a captain and so was Bailey.  I picked James, Kayla, Derek, and Mason.  Bailey chose Seth, Renee, Logan, and Jake.  It was pretty even, but I was pretty sure my team was better.  Kayla and I were pretty good for girls, while Bailey and Renee were not really good.  When the game was close, my team had eighteen points and the other team had fourteen, Chloe and Brian called everyone into the other room to start the service.

I stepped onto the stage and turned on my keyboard.  James, Seth, and Mason followed while everyone else took their seats.  Erika was not here so James and I were leading the songs.  I opened with a prayer and led the first song.  James led the next two.  He is an awesome singer.  He’s so talented, and really cute.  I stopped that train of thought and focused on the keys I was playing and song I was singing.  After I finished leading the last song, we went to take our seats while Brian came up to preach.  Mason and I did our traditional handshake that we did after every time we played and we all took the only available seats in the back.  Mason was like a brother to me.  He was really nice and it was never awkward around him.  My friends thought I had a crush on him, but I told them we were only friends and Erika could have him all to herself.  They are constantly trying to figure out who I like.  They already know I have a little crush on James, but I keep the other crush a secret.  The rest of the night passed quickly and I soon found myself driving home around ten ‘til midnight.

Saturday I slept until almost noon.  I don’t normally like sleeping that late, but I had an eventful, somewhat sleepless last two days or so and a late night last night.  The rest of the day was slow.  I called my mom to check in with her and see how her trip was going. She was doing fine but had to run to some meeting.  I finished cleaning my house from yesterday and finished all my homework for the whole week off ahead of me.  It feels good to look forward to a couple weeks with no school work.  After eating lunch and reading a bit, I decided it was a really good day out and I didn’t want to waste it indoors.  Around four in the afternoon, I pulled on my brown hoodie, Bermuda shorts, and sneakers.  I walked outside, bringing only my cell phone, iPod, and house keys and locking the door behind me.
