Maddie sniffled quietly as she placed her haphazardly packed clothes into one of Kendall's spare drawers in the oak cabinet. She could see her reflection in the steel handle. A red nose that would put Rudolf to shame and raw eyes, her eyeliner she had spent ages perfecting had faded to a slim black line.
Mom and Jill were watching Eastenders, the buzz of their sharp English voices sounded up through the lilac carpeted, wooden floorboards. Although the volume was up at its highest she could still clearly make out the rude words Mom was venting about Greg to Jill.
Maddie was the one who caught them...Greg and his...floozie as Mum called her. She knew...Maddie knew it wasn't a model he was photographing... In that lacy laungurie... She just knew. Greg sat there on the bed his face paling by the second. Maddie stood there in two minds over what to do...eventually yelling for her mother, voice cracking. Mom screamed and screamed for seemingly hours on end whilst Maddie bundled Mackenzie up and the pair went into the closet listening to some music. But even those ambiguously upbeat pop songs couldn't black out the screaming match downstairs.
Maddie knew what they were...Homewreckers...Mistresses... She saw them in those old movies Greg had. They were all blonde with big scarlet lips and large chests dressing in skimpy clothes Maddie would only dare wear to dance competitions. But Greg's mistress was different her name was Claire although Maddie couldn't care less what she was called. She had short hair in a pixie cut, very thin and pale skin and was not very tall...she reminded Maddie of an elf an evil elf who stole Greg away. Claire ran out the front door as soon as she was caught,Greg's plaid robe barely covering her modestly by a loosely tied knot.
A string of curse words and insults then entailed. It seemed to last forever, Maddie drifting into her own world thinking of dance until she was brought out of her world with a bang literally...Greg had stormed out of the house slamming the front door most likely chasing after his beloved Claire no doubt. "I'm not leaving this house I paid for it using my hard earned cash you stupid woman" he yelled of course he didn't say stupid woman he said much worse than that. So Mom did the only thing she could, rang up her best friend Jill, packed up her belongings and got the heck away from their new house as fast as possible.
Mom called for a man to change the door locks, faked a smile for the sake of her kids and strutted out the door to her loaded jeep ignoring the fact that her mascara was currently train tracked down her flushed cheeks.
Jill welcomed them with open arms immediately leading Melissa into the living room for a chat and a cuppa and telling Mackenzie to play with the hamsters to her hearts content. Jill squeezed Maddie's shoulder and offered her a warm smile which Maddie weakly returned.
Kendall wrapped her arms around Maddie. Maddie let herself be held for a second before pushing Kendall away trying her hardest to fight back the tears and ignore Kendall's hurt look.
Mackenzie swirled mom's large engagement ring. It was too big for her finger so she wore it on her thumb. Melissa had flung the ring across the living room but Mackenzie must have picked it up. She pretended she was getting married to Zac Efron and waggled her pink tongue at Maddie who could only sneer half hearted.
So here she was in Kendall's room...well it was now Maddie and Kendall's room for a while as well as Mackenzie's. Mackenzie was assigned the bottom bunk of the bunk bed which she wasn't too happy about and Maddie was to share with Kendall on the top.
"Are you alright Mads" Kendall's kind voice broke through her thoughts
Maddie gritted her teeth that was what Greg used to call her. "I'm fine" she forced out keeping her back turned as she shifted her gaze around the room eventually settling on the family pictures. Ezra, Jill and Kendall against the backdrop of some beach, all smiling....broadly not a care in the world
"You don't sound fine" Kendall murmured raising an eyebrow. Maddie was sick of all the questions from her mom about Claire from Mackenzie about what was going on from Jill if there was anything she needed and now from Kendall. Questions questions questions and she had no answers whatsoever.
"I said I'm fine" Maddie spoke rolling her glassy eyes as she continued folding her various tops and jeans
Kendall sighed crossing her arms
"You can talk to me Maddie I am your best friend after all" she spoke softly sympathy obvious in her voice.
Maddie gripped the cool handle of the drawer and whipped around.
"I don't want to talk Kendall so get that through your thick head and please, me being best friends with someone like you?...Never!" Maddie snapped glowering at Kendall
The beautiful brunette blinked shocked. Her doe eyes filling up with tears. Maddie's heart broke at the sight "Kendall I-" she started but was cut off as Kendall walked out of the room shutting the door. It seemed as if everyone in her life was walking away from her...and Maddie didn't know if they were coming back.
