There is a loud hissing noise, as the barista prepares my coffee. I glance over at Preston, beside me. He's sitting, absent-mindedly blowing air over his steaming coffee. My own drink is placed on the counter top before me.
I thank the barista and hand her my money, as Preston picks up his coffee and walks over to our usual spot, right in the corner of the shop next to the window. I pick up my coffee and follow him, sitting down onto the comfy bench across from him.
"So, Robby. Did you notice heart-eyes over there?"
I look up at his grinning face questioningly. He raises his eyebrows and nods his head back towards the bar.
The barista catches my eye, and winks. I feel my own eyes widen, and look down, cheeks burning.
Preston starts to laugh.
"Shut up, you pleb."
I smile back at him, a take a sip of my coffee.
This is our usual spot for grabbing a drink, after he's finished his art school classes and I've finished my college classes.
The coffee shop Is quite hidden, a little gem in the middle of the town.
Preston is my best friend. We've known each other since high school, and since then, although we've chosen different paths in terms of education, we've managed to stay pretty close.
His college is about a twenty minute cycle from mine, so we usually meet after to have a coffe and a chat.
Very white hipster girl, I know.
"So how's mitch getting on with Ashley?"
Preston asks me. Mitch is my housemate. I live with him and two other guys, all studying at the same college as me. Preston however lives with his Aunt and younger cousin, because they conveniently have a house very close to where Preston's classes are, a big posh art school made out of stone and marble.
"Pretty good, actually. They seem to be happy. She's come round for dinner a few times. Vik cooked up a real treat for us then."
Preston snorts.
"Him and his cooking. He should do a degree in that, not Physics."
I sip my coffee again. The windows in here are all steamed up, from the heavy rain we've had outside. I reach up a hand, and begin to doodle in the condensation.
Preston rolls his eyes at my childishness, but reaches up his own hand against the window next to mine.
His movements are far superior to mine, though. Years of practice have taught him to move his hand, or paintbrush, like a swan across every surface, on every painting, every drawing. Even if it is on a steamed up coffee shop window.
In the time it takes me to doodle my tiny flower, he's drawn a beautiful-looking tree. He's using his nails to add detail to it; tiny blossoms floating down to the ground.
"How do you do that?"
I ask, eyebrows raised. He turns to me, tree forgotten.
"What, that?"
"It's beautiful. And it's on a window!"
He looks down, hands cupped around his mug.
"You're going to be so good in the competition tomorrow."
I encourage him, smiling fondly.
"Well, I suppose we'll see. And actually it's only the initiation tomorrow. Not the actual competition. I have to pass this, first."
"pfft, Preston. Of course you'll pass!"
I look over at his tree, but the steam has already covered most of it up. All that remains is a faint outline.
"Rob, do you wanna come to my Aunt's with me for a bit? We could play some, I dunno, CS:GO for a bit?"
He asks me, stirring his coffee.
"Sure, dude. I've got nothing better to do."
I grin. He lightly hits my arms from across the table, and I pretend to wince, cradling it in my lap.
He stands up, his coffee finished, so I quickly gulp down the remains of my coffee and leave it on the table.
"Let's go."
