Chapter 2: New beginnings

I opened my eyes but kept my head down, silently thanking the goddesses that I was alive. But... who had saved me? Surely Mido or the Know-It-All brothers would be too cowardly to even look out of the windows of their houses, let alone take on a creature of the dark.

“Are you ok?”

I looked up suddenly, gasping quietly, as an unfamiliar voice, a boy of about my age, spoke to me.

“WH-who a-are you?” I asked, my voice trembling.

The golden haired boy extended his hand down to me, his bright blue eyes sparkling “My name’s Link.”

I tentatively took Link’s hand as he pulled me to my feet “I’m Ashikita, but the Kokiri call me Ash or fairyless.” I frowned, clutching the wooden pendant that hung around my neck: the one that had been my father’s.

It had been my good luck charm up until now.

I looked around uneasily, noticing the monster had gone. Had Link killed it?

I still felt unsafe, however. I haven’t felt safe since the Great Deku tree died.

“You don’t have a fairy.” I looked at Link, who was without a fairy, just like me.

The strange boy still had a hold of my hand and I stumbled as he suddenly broke into a run. I had no choice but to follow him.

“WH-where are we going?” I asked.

“We can’t stay here, it’s too dangerous.” Link replied and, before I realised, we were running across the bridge that led out of Kokiri forest. I dug my heels in, causing Link to stop. Link glanced back at me “Why did you stop?”

“I... I’m scared. I’ve never left Kokiri forest before; I don’t know what’s out there. I just know that my father was murdered by a gang of monsters on Hyrule field 10 years ago.” I admitted, looking through the planks of the rope bridge.

“I’ll keep you safe, don’t worry. We’re going straight to castle town.” Link replied, his voice full of confidence, so much so that I actually trusted him.

“Won’t it take a long time? I’m not sure how far it is.”

“I’ve got a horse, we’ll make it across the field in no time.” He smiled.

I fell silent as I thought about it and, when I looked up at him, I nodded, my free hand clasped around my father’s pendant. I walk towards him so that we cross the bridge together.
