We walked slowly towards his little cottage house which was just as beautiful in the outside as it was in the inside. There was a small, maintainable garden that was enclosed my a white wooden and wire fence.
The exterior walls looked like stone had naturally fallen and were cemented together like natures natural beauty. His door was like ones in fairy tales. It was wooden and rounded at the top like you would go up to a tower. Magnificent.
As we walked, Carsen made no attempt to touch me. We walked sepratly along a worn, dirt path. I wondered why he didn't live closer to Ryker? Shouldn't he be closer in case of emergency? Add that to my list of questions I guess.
My arms were folded across my chest and I took slight glances at Carsen but looked forward immediately after I looked at him. A shiver ran down my spine and the need to be closer had my body beging for his touch. Once we are standing outside the front door he opens it, but I hesitate.
"Carsen, what's going on between us?" I ask.
He takes in a long sigh and looks down at his feet. There was a beat of silence that had us standing there for what seemed forever. Frustrated, I walk inside and fall onto the couch. He was keeping things from me that I need to know. He promised we were going to talk. Talk about what? Whatever question I asked is redirected or answered with silence.
Carsen closes the door behind him and strides across the living room into the armchair across from me. His chocolate brown eyes show worry, but there is something more? Was he Nervous?
After another beat, the corner of his mouth peaks up into a small smile. I love his smile.
"Remember how I said that you have the Alpha, then the Beta, then the third in command?" He asks.
"Yes" I answer raising my eyebrow.
"Well, as I said, Ryker is the Alpha. He leads the pack and protects his land..."
"Yes, yes I know this already. I'm not stupid. I get the gist of that." I say annoyed. Can he tell me something I don't already know? Like answering my questions for once?
"Well, Ryker isn't particularly the rightful leader of this pack." He says carefully like walking around a sleeping baby.
"Carsen, cut to the chase here. I'm not five. If Ryker is not the actual leader of this pack then who is?" I ask.
"His Beta is." He says like its a giant weight unfolding in his arms.
"Okay, who is his beta?
"I am." He says.
Things start to click now. The venom, the story, the secracy, but what I don't understand is what it has to do with me.
"Okay," I start, choosing my words carefully, "what does this have to do with me?"
A moment of hesitation comes from him as he rubs the palms of his hands on his knees.
"Are you thirsty?" He asks all in a rush an starts towards the refrigerator. I stand abruptly, anger peircing through my tiny body
"Would you sit your ass down and tell me what the hell I have to do with the drama in this damned pack! You have been avoiding my questions and I'm getting really frackin' tired of it!"
I stop him midstride as he was walking passed the kitchen island. There was slight shock on his face, but it showed traces of amusement. He led out a sigh and walks over to sit on the couch next to me. He still leaves space between us and it makes my stomach flutter.
"You know what a soulmate is right?" He asks.
"Um ya, I'm not oblivious to all things. I mean, I've read the Twilight Saga a few times." I say sarcastically.
"Emily," he sighs again, "you are my mate."
My mouth goes dry as I connect dots to more dots. My head buzzes with more questions that needs answers I don't know if I want exactly. I find myself staring at a concerned Carsen face as bells and whistles try to sort things out.
"I'll have that drink now."
