Breathe in. Aim. Breathe out. Fire. I follow through touching my thumb to my shoulder. Dang it. I got it in the blue. (Pic of target above.) I grab another arrow and shoot again following the same process. That's better. I got that one in the yellow.
"Ruby," I hear my best friend Gage.
"Huh?"
"Nice shot!"
"Thanks but that's the only ten I have gotten today," I say disappointed. I usually have the arrows stacked in the yellow and maybe the red.
"We all have our off days Rube," he giggles at the nickname he gave me because he knows I hate it.
Gage is about 5' 10" and muscular so he towers over my 5' 3" slightly curvy self. His usually dirty blonde hair is lightening due to the weather slowly changing into spring. While my brown hair is getting more and more red. I smile at him and he smiles back.
Gage had moved to my small town in Indiana from Texas. He is an unknown country music artist and I am the only one that knows in our school (besides my three best friends that I tell everything.) I help him write songs and I record and post all of his covers on youtube.
I walk to the racks and put my bow up as the second round of people go up to practice.
"What happened on that second to last shot Ruby," asks my coach Mrs. Cansler.
"I must have over compensated. You know how I am," I laugh a little and so does she.
"It's alright this is just practice." With that she walks away and I find Gage again. He is talking to Tracy one if my best friends. Our friend group includes me, Gage, Tracy, Chloe, and Carter. Our other friend Vikki doesn't do archery because she babysits her little cousins a lot.
Tracy is ranting to Gage about how she got yelled at for her pants being too tight by a teacher. Gage is nodding his head barely paying attention. I walk up and immediately start ranting with Tracy.
"That was so messed up of Mrs. Moscow to yell at you for your jeans when Sammy was wearing leggings," I exclaim.
"I know right! How dumb," Tracy replies.
We rant until it's our turn to shot again. Mrs. Cansler blows the whistle twice signaling for us to grab our bows after I grab mine I stand next to Gage on the line. He is humming as usual so nudge him with my bow. He knows I hate distractions at the line. I hear one whistle signaling us to fire and I do. Breathe in. Aim. Breathe out. Fire.
