-Are you sure you're okay?- Asked Kristine over the phone she knew something was up.
-I am, honey.- I answered.
-Okay, then, I love you. Don't get home late, I made dinner.
-I won't, I love you.
-I love you more.
-No, believe me, I do.
I hung up and looked at the piece of paper that was laying in the seat beside me in my car.
I can't go home. I can't look at her in the eyes and act like nothing's wrong. I can't act as if I didn't got out of the doctor just now and he told me there's nothing left to do...there's not a cure...there's no help...no medicine... My head...all I've got is 24 hours.
I have to leave. I have to bear this pain all by myself. I'd rather leave this Earth knowing that she hates me because I left without saying goodbye and without letting her know the reason I left than leaving selfishly and having her go through this 24 painful hours with me.
24 hours, just expecting to be over. Fearing they pass, but knowing they will.
I never thought they'd be a day when I knew I was going to die...I always joked and said: "If I die today, I'd like to...". Now the day is actually here, when I have to say, " I'll die, I'd like to...".
Funny things is, you always think that if you knew you were dying, you'd instantly make a list of things and do them all on time, before the time arrives.
But it's not like that.
Now that I'm dying, I know there's is nothing I can do, but be scared.
I begin to drive while tears threaten to drown me. I let them. It's not like someone will make fun of me tomorrow.
Suddenly, my phone rang. Kristine. Should I pick up? No. I can't do this to her. I can't let her know. She'll be broken. I don't want our last exchanged words to be painful goodbyes. I want her to remember me by the last words I told her. That I loved her more. I want that to be our end. I won't put her through this day of hell.
I kept driving for what seemed like a few minutes but after looking at my phone, found out already 40 minutes had passed by.
I can't do this.
I can't leave without Kristine knowing.
I love her too much to leave her thinking it was probably something she did.
I turned in the next U turn I saw and went back. Back home. Kristine and my kids need me. I can't just leave.
..........
I finally got home. She's probably really mad, I think as I turn off the engine. No. If I'm going to do this...I'm going to do it right.
I will not leave them with the memory of Mr agonizing for the last hours to remember. I will make them remember me right. After all, I am not the priority here. After I'm gone, I won't be the one that'll have to deal with the memories but them.
I turned on the engine again and drove to the nearest pharmacy. Once there, I started looking for the things I need.
I paid for everything and started writing with the new papers and pen.
Minutes passed by and I could feel people staring at me. I was sobbing so hard while I wrote down the five important letters.
After finishing and calming down, I walked out of the pharmacy and to the car.
