She scurried down the long corridor, cursing the darkness as she went. Thankfully, there were no twists and turns, just a seemingly continuous hallway. It might've been wider had there not been so much furniture in the way. There were a few doors placed along the way, leading into spare rooms and closets. She knew the house well, or at least she used to. It didn't help matters that she had no candle, moonlight, or any light to help guide her. That was fine. She wanted it, no needed it to be dark.
Diamond-Marie (yes that's her whole first name) had to escape. She simply had to! He was coming for her; her past was haunting the present and threatening the future. Diamond was determined not to let him catch her. So she stumbled along the darkness hoping to reach the end of the treacherous hallway before he caught up to her. Hands stretched out in front of her, legs wobbling, she pushed herself onward. Running into a table a few moments later, Diamond decided to stop and rest. Just as she released a heavy sigh while leaning against the small stand, the lights flickered on. Damn, damn, damn! Diamond had hoped to the heavens and back that the power outage she had caused would've lasted longer than that. Looking towards her destination, she paled. Well she pales as much as a dark-skinned girl could without any help from makeup or special effects (which, by the way, wasn't very pale).
"Marie. J'etais en train de te chercher. Why are you running from me?" questioned the deep, soulful, and husky voice. It sent shivers down Diamond's spine every time she heard it but she couldn't let him see the affect he had on her. She'd rather die. He took a small step forward; she didn't even flinch. Another step. Diamond stood there like a deer caught in headlights. A few more steps, each quicker than the last, was all it took to send Diamond racing back down the long hallway from whence she came.
"Marie! Marie stop!" the man, her man, cried. She did not want to stop. She would not, could not stop.
Tires of running, she turned right into the first open door available, closing it quickly behind her. Fumbling for a lock, she realized there was none. Stepping away to find something to block the door, it occurred to Diamond that she knew the room. Thank the heavens, it had a fire escape outside one of the windows! Just as she was about to free herself from him, he burst through the door. She froze with one foot out the window and her dress hiked up around her thighs. Diamond looked into his eyes then, searching for something. She didn't even know what she was looking for.
"Marie. S'il vous plaît." he whispered. She barely heard what he said but she caught it. After a moment of searching his eyes once more, she whispered back, "I can't." A tear or two threatened to slide down her face as she resumed her escape.
He stood there for a moment before thinking, it's now or never. She was almost free when she felt something tug her back inside by her waist. Diamond made a mental note to scream when suddenly everything blacked out. The last thing she heard was his beautiful voice saying, "You can." Before the darkness swallowed her, Diamond uttered something that made the man's back go rigid. He looked down at her as a tear slid down his cheek.
"Marcus."
