"Just shut up the fuck up, okay!? I don't give a damn what you think!" I screamed behind me. I threw my hands up in frustration and spun around, walking out of the kitchen where my father stood at the sink, yelling right back at me. My thick 2-inch heels echoed across the polished wooden floor as I raced over to the key rack by the front door.
"You get back here, little girl! Right NOW!!" a male voice bellowed from behind. He had quickly thrown his dish rag back into the sink and followed me from the kitchen, but quick enough. He was sturdily built- with strong muscled arms and thick stout legs- but years of drinking had given him a beer belly bigger than himself that slowed him down considerably.
"No, you bastard!! I'm going out and you can't stop me!!" I yelled, grabbing my keys and throwing on my black leather jacket. I wrenched open the front door and quickly slammed it behind me, hoping it would slow the fat bastard down even more.
I paused on the porch, breathing in the cold, crisp night air and twirling the keys on my fingers, wondering where to go to get away from this god-forsaken place. Hearing the thundering footsteps inside the house, I raced down the stairs to the silver Toyota Supra my dad had bought me for my 18th birthday, 4 years ago. I jumped inside and closed the door just as my burly father came clomping down the porch steps. I fumbled for the right key & jammed it into the egnition as fast as i could. The car roared to life, headlights blazing. I grasped the gear-stick and switched to reverse just as the gorilla i call 'dad' slammed his hands on top of the car.
"GET OUT RIGHT NOW!!! YOU ARE BANNED FROM USING THIS CAR!!" He screamed.
I looked out the drivers window and gave a little smirk before gunning the gas pedal. I backed out of the driveway so fast he stumbled and fell, face first, into the dirt. Turning sharply, I spun the car in a full circle at the end of the driveway & tore down the road, away from that hell house.
Glancing in my rear-view mirror I saw my father, now standing, waving his arms wildly and kicking up dust. I laughed. It was a good, hearty laugh. The kind I hadn't experience in years, not since.... I shook my head. Nope, not right now. That's too depressing. I adjusted my mirror again to see the end of the road behind me and all the little house lights fading into the past. I flicked on the radio & tuned it to one of my favorite stations. This time it was 106.5 & Fort Minor was one. A smile grew on my face & I drove faster down the straight, dark road in front of me.
"And now," I said aloud. "To figure out where I'm headed."
