The loud blaring of an alarm broke the peacefulness of the early morning. A figure curled up into the sheets on the bed, a loud groan coming from it.
Oh god. School.
Usually, he didn't mind having to wake up early to go to school, but today, he dreaded it more than anything. This happened every Monday morning.
The boy, Alec, threw his sheets off of the bed, and stretched. He glanced out of the window, and saw but a few shades of muted greys and whites and blacks, and there was a pang in his heart. He knew that it couldn't be helped. That everyone saw only blacks and whites until a fateful moment - until they met their soulmate. Alec, at 16, had yet to meet his, but that wasn't unusual. Most people didn't see theirs until they were at their high school graduation.
Alec shook the thought from his head, and proceeded to walk over to his dresser. He hastily grabbed a T-shirt and a pair of jeans, quickly slipping them on.
"Alec, come on!" A voice crooned from the kitchen, and Alec sighed.
"Just give me a sec, Mom!" He shouted, and went into the bathroom to fix his hair. He looked into his own eyes, wondering what color they were.
When he had gotten completely ready, he grabbed his backpack, and made a beeline towards his kitchen. Flowers decorated the counter,,and there were curtains on the windows.
"Good morning sweetie." His mom said, standing on her tiptoes to kiss him on the cheek. He smiled softly, before he opened a cupboard, looking for his favorite cereal.
Once he had located it, he grabbed it, and poured himself a bowl. He noticed the smallest details of things - how the whites faded to greys and then blacks, and the sharp contrast if something was stark white, and a thing next to it was black. He absentmindedly tapped his foot, his leg moving up and down.
Just as he had thought things were relatively peaceful, a loud shriek came from the living room.
"MOM! IZZY TOOK MY CANDY AGAIN!"
Alec sighed softly as his sister, Isabelle, ran into the room.
"I only took it because he was messing around in my room." Isabelle huffed, her arms wrapped around something, presumably a chocolate bar, protectively. Their mother had her hands on her hips, and shook her head.
"Come on, guys. Just get along for at least a little while, okay?" She asked, and Isabelle grudgingly gave the smaller boy the candy bar.
After that, time seemed to fly by. The family got into the fairly sized car, and stopped at the high school. Alec got out of the car quickly, and nearly ran into a few people on his way into the building.
When he entered it, a familiar face popped up out of nowhere.
"Hey, Alec! What's up?" The girl, Clary, asked, a smile plastered on her face.
"Nothing." Alec grumbled, and Clary's smile soon turned to a slight frown.
Clary had already met her soulmate, and she was only a freshman. One could say that Alec was fairly jealous, but he usually tried to not let it bother him. Oftentimes, though, he wasn't successful. The jealousy was always in his eyes, though he tried to put a barrier up around it.
"Oh come on, Alec. Don't tell me you're bummed about still not having met the right person." Clary said, her eyes - though he had no idea what color they were - quite stern. Alec sighed, and threw up his hands.
"Fine, that's what it's about. You're only a freshman and you've found the person, and I'm a sophomore and I haven't found them yet." He said quickly, his eyes avoiding Clary. She put a hand on his shoulder, tentatively, before putting an arm around him.
"I'm sorry, Alec. You can't stay bummed about it forever. You'll meet them eventually." She said, before pulling away so that she could go to her first class of the day.
Alec sighed. That day would be a long one.
