The orange rays of sun seeped it's way through the bedroom window and fell on Hazel's calm face, that was devoid of any worries. Her relaxed, deep breathing, disturbed by the fall of light on her face became uneven as she stirred to her left, to stop these mean rays of light from waking her up. After tossing and turning around for so many minutes, Hazel quit trying to get some more sleep and woke up to a new day. A day that was going to bring changes into her beautiful life.
She got out of her bed, walked into her kitchen and set about making coffee for herself and John. When the milk had boiled, she heard John walk down the stairs and to the porch. The coffee was ready in the next 2 mins. She poured the coffee into their mugs printed with the letters H and J, and carried them to the porch. On nearing the chair where John sat, Hazel was surprised to see a bouquet of red roses on John's lap. She was taken aback. She gave John his mug and kissed him. After what felt like many minutes she pulled back and blushed. While she sat there and looked at him expectantly, John looked at her curiously. A full minute had passed and John hadn't yet given her the bouquet. Hazel was now beginning to think it actually wasn't for her.
She asked "Who is that for?" with a bit of an edge in her voice.
John looked even more confused than before and asked her "Did you get this for me?"
Hazel thought he must be playing with her and said "Cummon John, stop trying to fool me. You got this for me didn't you?" and giggled.
John said "No, I didn't. I opened the door and found this on our doorstep next to the newspaper."
She said "If it wasn't you who bought this, then who did?" and winked at him.
Hazel didn't believe him. She thought he was just playing with her like he always did.
"Hazel trust me. I did not buy this. Someone has placed it on our doorstep. Maybe they delivered it to the wrong address."
Hazel could tell he was telling the truth. She then asked him, "Is there a card?"
"Yes, there is. Here, look" and handed her a card on which, only the letter ' I ' was printed and nothing else. No message or a wish. Just a plain white card with the letter ' I ' on it. She wanted to know who this ' I ' was.
Sipping coffee from her mug, she told John that this ' I ', whoever it was, must be a romantic person. John simply smiled and shook his head. She was imagining the reaction of the woman to whom this was meant for, had she seen these roses.
John and Hazel were married for the past 6 months. He too gave her gifts, but he usually gifted her only for occasions. He never surprised her on normal days like these since their marriage and today when she saw those red roses, Hazel was really surprised and felt a thrill of happiness run through her. But now that it wasn't for her, she felt let down.
John sensed her mood. So, when Hazel got up and took their empty cups in her hand, John held her hand, then pulled her close and made her sit on his lap. He moved her hair aside and slowly slid his lips on her naked neck, where he kissed her gently. He then sucked in and slowly moved his lips to her earlobe and tugged at it. A tingling sensation coursed through her body and her breathing was becoming rapid. Leaving her earlobes he moved his lips to her jaw tracing it and trailed up to her cheek and made his way to her soft pink lips which were awaiting to be kissed. They sat there and kissed passionately.
They slowly pulled back and he kissed her forehead and said "Hazel I love you." She smiled and said "I love you too John."
They then set about to do their daily chores and before John left for work he asked her to be ready that evening as they were going out to have dinner. Hazel was thrilled. She actually thought it was great that the flowers had arrived that morning. She put them in the vase near the bedside table and admired it for a long time. They looked beautiful.
After finishing up all her work, she was getting ready, when she heard John pull up the car on the front lawn. She was applying makeup when he came into the room. He kissed her and went to have a shower. He walked down into their hall after he'd gotten ready and saw Hazel sitting there on the couch looking beautiful. He looked at her with love and said "You look beautiful darling." Hazel blushed and said thanks.
They had a wonderful night and that was their last wonderful night.
