It was a cold summer night in Salisbury Maryland . as I was walking home from the post office .trying to get home for dinner. it was my sister's birthday so there was a lot of mail from relatives. sending her birthday cards. as I was passing an alley I heard high pitched whining. sure enough, I looked and at the end of the alley was a small box. I slowly inched towards the box opened it... And what I saw was absolutely heartbreaking.Inside the box of there was a small black and brown puppy he looked up at me as if to say "please help me." I was so shocked. The puppy was dirty and skinny and he had a chain around his neck. The box was too wet and soggy to carry, so I took off my coat wrapped the puppy in it and put him gently in my bag. Then left a little hole for him to breathe. and I continued my on my walk home.
Surprise!?
When I got home my mom greeted me at the door "why are you not wearing a coat" "I got warm" I replied hoping that would knock her off my scent "the sun went down" Annie what's going on?" " nothing" I said skittishly "here are the letters." I handed them to my mom and with that I took off to my room with my backpack.my family used to have a dog ,he was the best I miss him so much.but I still have his old bed ,collar and some training pads for when he used to go in the house. so I went in my closet. took down the training pads got his bed, went in my desk drawer and found his collar the name cocoa the tag was almost gone from being worn out. I took a sharpie out and looked at the dog "what should we name you?" I said to him. acting as if he would answer me. How about flash because you have that little lightning bolt looking thing in your fur. The puppy just gave me a weird confused look. Then I heard it, from downstairs. "Annie time for dinner." "Coming!" I shouted. As I was enjoying my pizza I said " so, you know how we were talking about getting a new puppy because of coco." "Yeah." Mom said nervously glancing at dad. "Well.... on my way home from the post office I found a box and in that box was a small weak little German Shepherd and I couldn't just leave him there. I rolled him up in my coat put him in my backpack and I made sure he could breathe then I walked home with him. I put him in my room he's there now. I got him Coco's old bed collar and training pads. I wrote flash on Cocos collar tag because he has a little lightning bolt stripe sort of thing in his fur on his chest. he's so adorable and he has nowhere to go can we please help him? we know what having a dog is like. we have the vet number we are prepared for a dog. please let me keep him. he has nowhere else to go and if we put him in a shelter I could be put down because the shelters around here are filled with homeless dogs I've seen them all." "Well" mom said "since you seem to have everything prepared I guess it'll be like a birthday present for your sister." "YESSSSSSSSS !!!!" I screamed my sister and I started jumping up and down. I was so happy and so was she. I have a good relationship with my sister. We love each other and we're like bff's.
The hike
That night my mom came in to say goodnight she looked at flash sleeping in his new bed he's one lucky little guy isn't he she said softly yeah I laughed and with that she walked out as she left she said goodnight you two I smiled the next morning I woke up to a barking German Shepherd I shot up in bed frightened oh it's just you I sighed then looked at my clock 5:00 Sunday morning I got myself out of bed put on a pair of black leggings and a navy blue tank top then I slowly crawled past my sister and ND parents room flash trailing behind we finally made it downstairs then I grabbed my knapsack put an apple a turkey sandwich and and a tennis ball closed up my Knapsack and put it on the counter then I grabbed a piece of paper and pen I wrote dear mom and dad I'm going out hiking with flash I'll be back in time for lunch sincerely Annie then I pulled back my long sandy blonde hair into a ponytail grabbed my dirty nikes and under armour sweatshirt with that I grabbed flash's leash and headed out as I was walking down the road to my favorite hiking spot crystal mountain forest preserve. flash trotted along side me happily panting then he started pulling on his leash as if he knew we were getting closer then I saw it the waterfall and my tree."this is it." I said to flash. He gave me a confused glance I put flash In my knapsack climbed up the tree it was harder with flash's weight straining on my shoulders making my muscles ache when I got to the top I hopped onto the rocks then I knelt down and slowly pulled flash out of my knapsack then I carefully looked for a small opening in the ground when I found it I scooped up flash and slide down into my cave I've lived in Salisbury since I was two and when I was six I found this cave behind a waterfall it's like I feel at peace there as if it's kind of like my happy place I have lots of things there I have my rusty, old first aid kit, four sketchbooks, sleeping bags, and even a candy stash from Halloween when I got in the cave I Imedeatly felt at home and safe as if being in my own cozy bed I took out a sleeping bag and layer it on the rocky ledge in the cave that I use as a sofa or bed I sat down what do you think I said to flash he cooked his small head and peacefully gazed at me then I went over to my clothes box as I dug through the box I found it my swimsuit I pulled it on and tied the strap around my neck I called cmon flash he hesitantly backed up don't be scared I coaxed
Just then he ran,and happily plunged into the "pool" it used to be a hot spring. I jumped in with him. Flash was a surprisingly good swimmer. He was just having the time of his life.
