Chrysanthemum

Run. Run. Run.

My thoughts haunted me as I sat in dead silence. I always sat in silence and thought. As if I was paralyzed, stuck in the same spot for hours upon hours waiting for 9 oclock; when he made me go out into the shadows of the night and give myself to as many men as I could by the time 1 o'clock rolled around. At 1 o'clock I would meet him back on the corner that he dropped me off from and get dropped off at a home I was forced to inhabit, while he went out to check on his multiple warehouses. This usually took up to 5 hours minimum. I've had 5 hours every day for the past 5 months to run away from this sick bastard but I can't. Afraid to know what would happened when I got away.

I stopped the thoughts of running away as soon as they came and pushed myself off of the floor in the far right corner of the apartment. It was pretty spacious and comfortable and I hated it, but I refused to dwell on things I couldn't change.

I walked to the front of the apartment to find something to eat and watch some tv to take my mind off of things. I walked into the small kitchen looking for something I could devour but came up empty handed. I sighed in frustration and slumped on the couch. I turned on the tv and watched whatever had already been on.

After 5 minutes I had zoned out and became buried in my thoughts once again. Everyday I wanted to leave and tell the cops what this man has been doing but that would result in me going to jail too, so I kept quiet. I was waiting for the perfect moment, maybe my breaking point, or when I found something else to live for.

The door slamming knocked me out of my thoughts. I turned my attention to the door to see him stumbling in. When he realized I was sitting there a devilish smile appeared on his face. I immediately backed up as he came closer to me. "Come here Andrea" he said reaching out to me. The fact he called me by my mother's name showed me he wasn't even close to being himself. I tried to run to the back but I wasn't fast enough. Even in his drunk state he was alert. I screamed as loud as I could. I zoned out when he began pulling my pants down because no matter what I did he wouldn't stop. He was taking away my last bit of dignity and there was nothing I could do. My screams had fallen on dead ears and fighting back only made him more agressive. "I love you Andrea" he whispered my mothers name in my ear before everything grew black.

I woke up hoping someone had found me and saved me but I was in the same bed I had slept in every night. I sighed in frustration and broke down into tears. I wanted so badly for someone to save me from a place where I couldn't even save myself.

It finally dawned on me, I had to save myself first. I rushed around the apartment as fast as I could packing all the things I needed on a daily basis. I was ready to go but I knew of I didn't have any money I couldn't really go far. So I put my bag at the door and walked to the bookcase that sat innocently in the living room. I moved it up as far as I could and pulled out the cut out in the wall. There was safe behind it that I never realized. I had reached a dead end. I was about to give up until I realized what the password was.

As I typed in the password of my mother's birthday I felt a tug as my heart but I had no time to cry. The safe popped open and there in front of me laid 3 million dollars. I put as much as I could into my bag.

After I put everything back in place, I grabbed the bag and hit all the back streets to the bus stop so I wouldn't be seen.

I got off the bus three blocks away from the airport. I ran as fast as I could and my legs started to hurt from the impact of my feet smashing into the concrete. I finally walked through the doors and up to one of the ladies working behind the computers. "Yes how may I help you?" she asked without even looking in my direction.

"When's the next flight out of state and where is it going?" I rushed out.

"The next flight is off to New York City in 20 minutes" she stated typing away at the computer.

"How much is the ticket?"

"$159 for a One way" she stated finally looking at me. I handed her the money and she handed me my ticket and I walked off to sit in a vacant chair off to the side of everyone. I rested my elbows on my knee's and my head in my hands. I felt uneasy and scared because I knew I still wasn't safe. I wouldn't be safe until I was on that plane and then I was still uncertain.

20 minutes rolled around quickly and my flight was being called over the intercom. I walked down the corridor and finally got seated right before the plane took off. As the plane left the ground, I let out a sigh of relief. I was free.
