REMEMBER: OVERRATED DOESN'T MEAN BAD
Ultimately, this is opinion. But here's what I think makes good music.
I judge a band, artist, or genre by personal opinion, quality of lyrics, and quality sound.
Now what makes a band overrated, is the good music, above popularity ratio.
Let me give you a well known example: Nirvana.
Personal Opinion: 7/10
Lyrics: 5.5/10
Sound: 8.7/10
Overall: 6/10
That was my personal opinion on that band.
Let's move on to the ratio.
Their popularity was astronomical in the 90's . I mean, they created a new fucking genre of music! The public absolutely devoured the dark lyrics in contrast with the angsty sound.
The bands popularity died down for a while, and is now coming back to the charts. The sad part is that the band is almost a fad.
I've heard multiple stories of people going into Hot Topic with a Nirvana shirt on, and others commenting on it, saying that they're gonna see them IN CONCERT.
Their popularity is extreme because of people like this, praising their work, when they've only heard a couple songs.
I find this common in boy bands such as the Jonas Brothers and One Direction. That's why people say that those bands are overrated. Quality/Popularity.
Nirvana's ratio: 6/8
You see how the popularity is bigger than the quality? That's what makes them overrated.
