"Hey, BFF. What's up?" Chrystal asked as she came up behind me.
"Hey, Chrystal. How was your day?" I greeted. Like I do every day after school.
Chrystal and I have known each other since I was six months old and she was eight months old, and ever since kindergarten we have been walking home together because our houses are on the same street. We are two of the most popular girls in seventh grade, but non of our other friends are anywhere near as close to us as we are to each other.
She groans before she answers my question. " It was fine, I guess. I still don't know why they make us go every day. It's not like we have good teachers anyway."
"Our teachers aren't that bad." I try to defend them. I'm an honor roll student with straight A's and have never once gotten in trouble with anything more serious than forgetting to do little assignments every once in a while. Chrystal on the other hand, is a straight C student and is either grounded or in detention almost every other week. Some people have no idea why we are so good of friends. I guess the saying opposites attract is true. I make sure she passes her classes and makes sure she doesn't get in to much trouble and she makes sure I at least live a little. Without each other she would be an F student in juvenile detention center and I would be an outcast that is to busy reading to make friends.
"Oh, hey! You know Caydene?" she says just put of the blue as we start walking home.
"Daniels? Yeah." I respond a little cautiously.
"Well, today in PE he ran me over while chasing this guy he was trying to tag, so after class he came up to apologize. We started talking and long story short, I invited him to your birthday party tomorrow!"
"YOU DID WHAT?!?" I yelled out in shock.
"Aww... Come on Hay! I know you've had a crush on him for years. But without me you'll never have the nerve to talk to him."
"Thank You, I guess. But you still should've asked first." I say with an angry expression. I wasn't even that mad but I wanted her to think I was. The truth was I did like Caydene and I was overjoyed he wanted to come to my party.
"I'm sorry, Hay. Forgive me?" she said with a little pout.
I giggle at her trembling lower lip. "Just this once. You better stop sticking your lip out or a bird will come poop on it." I say and we both start to laugh.
When we reached Crystal's house she turned to me. "Are you staying to do homework?" I stay almost everyday, it's practically the only way she does her homework, but today I had to go home early.
" Not today, I have to help mom cook dinner and then do some last minute party planning for tomorrow. Thanks though, I'll see you later."
"Okay, suite yourself. Bye!"
When I get home I see my mom's car in the driveway, which is odd because I usually beat everyone home if I don't stay at Chrystal's. I walk in to the living room to find it empty. Nothing but the same black leather furniture and white accessories that have always filled the room.
I smile as I look at the fireplace, where our new family portrait hangs. They must have just put that up this afternoon before I got home. In the portrait my mom sits on a stool with my baby brother Harley in her lap and my little sister Haven is on her knees in front of them. I stand on mom's left with my hand on her shoulder and my older brother Hayden stands on her right with his hand on her other shoulder And our step father, David, stands behind our mom with his hands on top of Hayden's and my hands. The picture was just taken a couple weeks ago and is definitely the best family photo we've ever taken.
My baby brother Harley just turned a year old like a month ago, my little sister Haven is four and a half and my older brother Hayden is sixteen. Our father left us right before mom found out she was pregnant with Harley. She met David soon after and they fell in love and got married a year later. David is a nice guy but it's hard to let him replace my dad because even though dad left I still hold hope he will be back.
"Hello? Is anyone home?"
"Hi, Honey. I'm in the..."
"Haylee!" Haven screamed as she climbed on the couch and jumped off the back. I grunted as I struggled to catch her before she fell to the ground.
"Hey, Haven. How was your day?" I asked when I was sure she wasn't going to fall out of my arms.
"Good. How was you day?"
"It was good." Just then Harley decided he wanted to be picked up also and started to scream.
"Aylee! Up!"
I kissed Haven on the head, set her down and walked over to the play yard Harley was trying to climb out of.
"Okay buddy, come here." I picked him up and kissed his forehead, causing him to giggle.
I settled Harley on my hip, grabbed Haven's hand and started walking toward the kitchen where I heard my mom's voice. When I walked in I saw mom was balancing her checkbook at the table.
"Hey, Mom." I greeted her as I put Harley in his highchair.
"Hey, honey. how was your day?" mom piled all of the papers in front of her and pulled Haven into her lap, focusing her attention on me.
"It was good, just another day at school." I went to the counter and pulled three cups and a sippy cup out and filled them with juice. Then I grabbed the cookie jar and set it on the table. After giving Harley his sippy cup and a few cookies I carried the cups to the table for mom, Haven, and I.
"Well that's good. Are you excited for your birthday tomorrow?" mom asked grabbing a cookie and taking a bite.
I handed Haven a cookie before answering.
"Yeah, I am. This is my first boy/ girl party."
"You really are growing up. I can't believe you'll be thirteen tomorrow, a teenager. I remember how I felt the first time I held you at the hospital when you were born."
"Ah, mom. Don't get all mushy on me."
"I'm sorry. I'll stop, I'll stop." We both started laughing, causing Haven and Harley to pretend to laugh so they didn't feel left out.
"Mom, are we going to the store tonight to get stuff for my party?"
"I'm sorry, honey. I'm too busy tonight. I'll have Hayden take you when he gets home, okay?"
"Okay, sounds good. Now if you will excuse me I have some homework to do."
I got up, put my cup in the sink and headed into my room to not only tonight's homework but tomorrow's as well.
