{Mickey's Diner}
~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~
Waiter: what can I get you boys?
Luis: um-- just two chocolate milkshakes
The waiter wrote down the orders and smiled at the two boys.
Luis: (looking at Adam) I can't believe we're only two months away from the final hockey game of the season. We're so close.
Adam: (looking down at the table) uh-huh.
Luis: are you okay?
Adam looked up at Luis with a pale expression
Adam: why wouldn't I be?
Luis: you seem -- depressed.
Adam: I'm fine, Luis.
Waiter: here you go, two chocolate shakes for y'all.
She set the drinks on their table and handed them two red straws.
Luis and Adam both drank from their ice cold drinks.
Adam was looking down at the table as he drank his milkshake.
Luis looked at him with concern, but he didn't say anything.
Adam sighed. Then he closed his eyes for five seconds.
Luis was concerned.
Luis: are you sure you're okay?
Adam: (frustrated) Jeez, stop asking. I'm fine
Luis looked confused. "I'm just trying to help" he thought.
Adam had this - look... On his face. A look of misery and sadness.
Luis: (raised his eyebrows) you're doing it again, Adam
Adam: (still looking down at the table) huh? What -- (looking at Luis) I'm not doing anything.
Luis: c'mon. You're making that face again. Your depressed face. You're thinking about something, aren't you?
Adam: depressed face? (Raised his eyebrow)
Luis: yeah, y'know. That face you make when you're upset.
Adam: I'm not upset
Luis: (chuckling) uh-huh, sure.
Adam sighed and looked out the window by his left side.
Adam: is it that obvious?
Luis: what?
Adam: that I'm upset?
Luis: yeah, Kind of. I mean (shrugged) I notice...but-
Adam: I'm not depressed I'm just -- there's a lot on my mind right now, that's all
Luis: like what?
Adam: (sighed) you know what, Luis.
Luis: (shaking his head) when are you gonna spit it out, Adam? You've been keeping this in far too long.
Adam: and it's gonna stay that way, okay? Look, I trusted you with this. You're the only one I could trust. Don't say anything, man. Please
Luis: you know me better than that, you know I'd never say anything.
Adam: so why are you pressuring me to say something? I told you I'm not ready yet.
Luis: you've been saying that for three years.
Adam: and I mean it.
Luis: you can't run away from everything, got that?
Adam: I'm not running away
Luis: yeah you are, Adam. You're overthinking everything too much it's taking control of you. You think that if you tell everyone, your life will be over. That's-
Adam: it's true.
Luis: no it's not, it's not. Come on...you know the ducks would never say anything. They'd never think different about you, or judge you. Think about everything coach Bombay taught us. You have to believe in yourself, or if you don't, then -- I don't know, but...stop assuming things. Stop assuming that it's like -- suicide, if you say something.
Adam: you don't know what assholes the varsity team are. If anyone of them find out, my life will be crap...for sure.
Luis: I never said you should tell them. I said the ducks, Adam. The ducks. They're our family.
Adam: (sighed) I can't Luis, not yet. I'm just -- trying to handle the pressure. You have no idea how it feels like. Every morning I wake up feeling -- scared, that maybe my life really will be over if anyone else finds out. Scared that no one would accept me if I confessed. You don't know what it's like, I can't say anything right now, not now.
Luis: hey...
Adam looked up at Luis
Luis: no matter what, I'm here for you, Banks.
Adam: (chuckles) yeah, I know Luis.
Luis: (nodded) so, when do you think you can tell them? No pressure... Just asking
Adam: I don't know, just maybe -- after the final hockey game.
Luis: so -- two months?
Adam: (eyeing him up and down) ...I-- I don't know.
Luis: (concerned) you don't have to rush things. Whenever you're ready.
Adam: (nodded) yeah. Yeah.
Luis: I think we should go, yeah?
Adam: (sighed) yeah.
Both boys got up and Luis patted Adam's back.
Luis: c'mon, I'll pay
Adam: you payed last time, I'll pay
Luis: it's the least I can do, I'm paying
Adam: fine. ...thanks
Luis dug his pocket for his wallet. Him and Adam walked to the entrance of the diner and over to the counter.
They saw Charlie's mom talking to a lady.
She took a glimpse of the teenaged boys looking at her.
Mrs. Conway: (smiling) hi boys.
Adam: hey, Mrs. Conway
Mrs. Conway: what can I get you two?
Luis: (putting the money on the counter) actually, Mrs. Conway, we were just leaving.
Mrs. Conway: oh, well -- good luck during practice today.
Adam: thanks.
Mrs. Conway: (laughing) drop by again, boys.
Luis waved at her before both him and Adam left the diner. Once they opened the door, the hot wind hit them.
Adam: (checking his watch) we're late for practice.
Luis: (checking his watch quickly) crap, you're right.
Adam: c'mon, we gotta hurry or coach will kill us.
Luis: and you're just standing there? (Laughing) C'mon
They both started running to Eden Hall.
Adam: (running) do you think we'll get there in time?
Luis: if you keep asking so many questions, we'll never get there. Hurry up, shit head.
